I am in the verge of purchasing a cushion from one of the three big boys in the moder vintage cut cushion game. The stone I am looking at is a 2.09 carat F VS1 7.62-7.44-5.09. Excellent polish , good symmetry. It looked very nice but what do I know!! I was told it faced up big and it has good light performance. I know it looked beautiful in alot of the different angles I held it. Any input is welcome. It's a big purchase and I want to make sure I am getting a diamond that will have good light performance. Thanks in advance everyone.

Thanks! It did look very nice, the aset did not have as bright of red as I thought it would, compared to some others I have seen.

The question for me was did I love the diamond? I looked at perhaps 6-8 different stones, knew nothing about their stats and never saw an ASET. I picked the stone that called to me and love it. If you love this diamond (it's beautiful) then it is your stone. I realize that ASETs etc are a good tool, but don't live and die by them.

Big purchase indeed! From the pictures you posted it does look like a very bright sparkly stone. Do you like the faceting pattern?
Do you like the contrast in the stone?

I do like the facet pattern. It mimicks a old mine very well I think and I like the chunky look not the more modern smaller panels that most cushions have. As far as the contrast goes, it is hard for me to really see it. I know when I held the diamond it was bright and it had panels that when I rotated the diamond looked like they had varying shades of bright so I think it adds to the brilliance of the diamond. I am nervous because the center if the aset is light blue and not much red. This purchase isn't as much about me as it is going to be HER lol. When she has it on I want her to feel good about it. I want it to be bright and Alive, my biggest fear is I buy a dud!

Hey, Triks86! :wavey:

From the photos you've posted, I definitely don't think you've got a "dud" by any means! If that were mine, I know I'd feel GREAT about it!!!

It is a really beautiful stone - you did a great job! :appl:

Thank you, I didn't pull the trigger yet though! I wanted to get some feedback from the forum and. Sleep on it for a day or two before I fully committed. Very nerve racking! I was looking at a diamond from good old Gold, which seemed to have excellent light performance. My only concern was the large culet which I absolutely cannot get over ! I know some people
Love it but not me!! This is only the 3rd stone I have seen with a medium culet, so I am wondering it it my best option!!!!

Is the seller holding it for you? (I hope so -- I'd hate to see it get snatched away!!)

If you don't like a large culet, then this one seems like a winner! Go for it!!

Yes I left a deposit on it and he is going to hold it for a few days for me to decide.

Yay! Can't wait to hear what you decide! =)

I absolutely love well cut antique cushions! But I have to tell you, I sent for a GOG AVC that had a large culet and I could not even see it in real life. So can you link the stone you are interested in so I can see how large it really is? I'd just like to compare it to this one to see the differences including overall look and light performance. Ultimately you have to choose the one that pleases your eye the most, but if you want opinions, I think you need to show the other stone.

I'm with Diamondseeker - I LOVE a well cut cushion! Gorgeous!

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10434/.... Here is the other one in contention. It is the closest thing I could find to what I wanted from good old gold. Victor canera also have me a quote on at 2.21 carat but it was way above budget and also had a large culet.

So does that mean that you think the stone I picked out is a well cut cushion? I guess my hesitation is because the aset does not look like I was expecting, but I do not know if it is still considered a good aset regardless. I think a lot of the diamond I looked at are very nice, I don't have a great eye for picking out diamonds lol this is my first time !

I have struggled a lot myself along the way to determine what I like best and it has taken looking at a lot of diamonds to really define my tastes. I recently bought an August Vintage Round from GOG because the stone I chose was just exceptionally cut and had great light return. I do like a lot of the modern cut antique style cushions. But I do think the GOG stone has a better ASET. I like the shape of the one you first posted a lot. But it does not have as much red in the center as I would personally want, and I think that is important. I have sent for and seen two AVC's and know how good their light return is. One of the stones I saw had a larger culet than this GOG stone, and it was difficult to see in real life size. So I honestly think you are worrying for nothing about the culet size of the GOG stone, because it simply is going to be so small that it won't be very noticeable. In fact, I hope to get one someday, and I want a larger culet facet than that one has because I like seeing it! This one also has ideal light performance, very good polish, and ideal symmetry, which indicates a very well cut stone. The other one is nice, but I rate the AVC as a step up in cut quality. But that is my opinion based on seeing some in person and looking at the ASET's.

Yes I totally understand. For my future fiancée though she struggles with the larger culet. I don't want her to have to explain why there is a black dot in the middle of her ring lol. I had never heard of a culet before I started looking for these diamonds! My concern was as you stated that the diamond did not have enough red in the center. I did read on one of Jonothans blogs GOG that you do want a mix of red and green 60-40 I believe is what it said, but I don't know if this diamond has enough deep red to satisfy me. I may have to go back on the hunt!

Here is a magnified image of the 2.09 diamond

The thing is, unless her hand or the setting the stone is sitting in is black, the culet facet is not going to appear black. It only looks black if there is black behind it. It is fine if you want to find one with a smaller culet facet. But just for educational purposes, I am going to show you a couple of pictures.

First, two AVC's against a black background, and then on my hand. (These are lower colors.)

You are right, the culet does look much smaller on your hand. I really like the diamond on the left! I know GOG has great optics and light performance, I would be curious to see how much better than The diamond I had in mind. A trip to Long Island might be in order this weekend lol
