Hi. both my fiancee and I are long term pricescope visitors and finally decided to "come out" with a question. I proposed to her over christmas (no ring yet) and have been educating ourselves through pricescope before purchasing. We find this site very helpful, thank you.

We are looking for a well cut round diamond that maximizes spread. One thing we have gathered from Pricescope is that you don''t want to pay for weight you cannot see. Browsing through different sites from all the recommended vendors, we find hard to determine if the diamonds listed are as "wide" as they should be because the weight is often in points of a carat , for example 0.79, 0.86, 0.92 and so on.

We found a chart in Amazon.com listing different mm measurements for a given carat weight but the chart does not really tell much for diamonds between 0.50 - 1 carat . Would you be able to point us out to a chart or past thread with more detailed information? If not, what mm increase in size should you expect for each 0.01 increase in carat weight?

Thank you.

there is a chart like that somewhere here. Do a search in the top right and you should find it.

mm to size conversion
Thank you. It looks like there is not a lot of difference in size between a .80 - 1 carat diamond. Is this true? Can the eye differentiate between 6 and 6.5 mm''s? Based on what we have looked at, you pay a lot more once you go into .9 - 1 carat range. We were curious to know if it is really worth it. Any thoughts?

Your welcome :) I'm not to sure to tell you the truth, I think it possibly could but it depends on how much your willing to spend to get that extra .5mm

I know when last looked at some diamonds I could tell a difference between a 7.2mm (1.4ct) and a 1.6 ct (can't remember the exact measurements but the size difference was not that much to warrant the thousands of dollars price increase, I could definitely see the difference between the 1.4ct and the 2ct though ;).

I have been told by many a jeweler that a .90 when set will look like a 1ct how true this is I don't know, I think the best way is to go to a jeweler and look at really well cut .80 .90 and 1ct stones your eyes will be the best judge of the difference in size to you and then it really comes down to are you willing to pay more for it.

I wish we could. We have not been able to find any jewelers in our area carrying anything other than AGL certified or uncertified stones. That''s why we are going to purchase online. Thank you.

My other suggestion is call a jewelery store and ask to see round brilliant stones in say 5.5mm 6mm and 6.5mm, no need to buy them though :) they should be able to measure them for you :).

Evaluate them on the basis of size and which size your FI like best take that measurement away with you and aim for a size as close to that mm measurement as possible in your budget. Thats how my BF and I decided on my stone measurement size :).

Hope that helps some :):):)

ETA: we also bought over the net :) this helps put those measurements in perspective :)

Thank you for the suggestion. It''s very hard to visualize how these measurements look in real life. My fiancee was cutting circles and taping them to her finger the other day... Funny! (She will kill me when she finds out I put this online) LOL

When you are talking about a smaller stone, you can easily see .5mm. When it is a bigger stone, it becomes harder to see.

That being said, an ideal cut .90 RB is going to be as big or bigger than 90% of the 1 carat stones on the marketplace today. So you really need to decide if YOU can tell the difference in size or not. It doesn't matter if the stone is certed or not, the carat weights will be right on even if the spread is a bit off. So go ask to see some stones that are all of the same cut quality and are .75, .85, etc. You'll get an idea of what your eyes can see and what they cannot.

Also when 2 stones are set and are side by side, size differences become harder to see.

HTH!

ETA: You can't say that a 1 pt difference in carat weight will equal a certain spread difference. It depends on WHERE that 1 point is, and how well cut the stone is. But 1 pt will NOT make a difference. 10 points WILL make a difference.

Oh we have ALL been there!

A beautifully cut and well-proportioned stone will look bigger than a poorly cut stone, even if they are the same size. What's your budget? What are you looking for? You can start by looking at the stones listed here. Cut Search

Then post the links and ask for opinions if you have any questions.

I found this website is useful for determining actual size:

http://www.ajediam.com/Sizes-of-Diamonds.html

It has relative diagrams and approximate measurements for almost all cuts.

Hope it helps

Dee is right, this chart is a little optimistic, deduct around .1mm apparently for greater accuracy ( as advised by one of the pros here).

I know this is just one example, but that is spot on for my 0.8ct AGS000 RB - 6.0mm, which is what the AGS report and sarin report says.

Thank you for all the responses. I disappear and BANG ! a gazillion answers.
We just came back from a couple stores at a local mall and did what you all have suggested. We did not notice a big difference between a 1 carat diamond and others in the .84-.90ish range. The difference was only slighty noticeable when she wore them side by side.
To us, it might not be worth the difference in price.

We are open to suggestions regarding round diamonds & classic 6 prong mountings with a budget of 5,000. Any carat weight ( with good spread), from .8 -1 carat is good. As far as color, she will prefer a colorless - near colorless stone. Clarity - As long as it''s clean, we are good!

Thank you and we are looking forward to your suggestions.

Thank you for the suggestions. I spoke with Brian at Whiteflash. Really nice guy. I think we are getting very close to making a decision on this.
We''ll keep you posted. Does GOG offer a Pricescope discount? It does not seem that way.

The only discount is the bankwire price.
