First, I want to give a summary of my diamond search. I had been very intent on buying from Blue Nile, and then I discovered this message board and learned about drop shipping. Then I contacted a few PS vendors...James Allen and Whiteflash both had great customer service, but Engagement Rings Direct (ERD) intrigued me the most. Since Mark is in NYC, his "in-house" inventory is huge, which was a big plus for me.
I did a search on his site and emailed him. He contacted me immediately, and said he would start doing research. He was very nice and informative. This was the stone we decided on a few days later:
Round GIA Excellent
1.65 ct/G/SI2
Polish & Symm: EX
7.55 x 7.58 x 4.68
Depth: 61.9 (I know it will look smaller than 1.65 ct, but anything over 1.5 was a bonus)
Table: 56
Crown: 34.5
Pavilion: 40.8
HCA: 1.3 (EX,EX,EX,VG)
Wire Transfer Price: $9,730
Mark was able to bring the stone back to his office and look at it over 2 days. He said it has "beautiful arrows", and is a "very good SI2". He said that if I was looking for an H&A/AGS000-type diamond, this is it. The next day he looked at it again, and said that it truly is a beautiful stone. People here say Mark has a great and honest eye, so I decided to go ahead with the purchase (and the price seemed great compared to other sites).
I also showed him the Blue Nile setting I want, and he said I could get it for $200 cheaper thru him. The ring should be in next week, and I will post pictures (the proposal happens later this month!).
