Boot Help . . . UggH!

Hi,

I would like to purchase boots that are like Uggs, but are less trendy and less expensive. Is there an equivalent? I like the low style. I almost ordered these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005407TN2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER, but then read a review indicating these are quite slippy. I need the opposite of slippy. Grippy is what I need!! I tend to fall, every now and again, so need shoes/boots that work with me, not against me, in that regard.

From my experience there's nothing grippy about Uggs or similar. They don't have any sort of traction on the bottom. And I have eaten it on too many slippery surfaces for all to watch finding that out the hard way. (And have subsequently done my best MaryCatherineGallagher "Im Ok" reenactment afterwards) I try to not wear them outside on snowy/icy days. I have a pair of I think Merrells for that, or Sorel's maybe? that I bought specifically for that. I have also got a pair of YakTrak things that I have yet to test out for the days where something happens while I am at work and not wearing appropriate shoes for that weather. Conveniently in my car and not where I would need them...

See now, that is very helpful! If they are all that way, then it's not really a fault solely (lol) against the cheapie ones.

I guess what I would really like is cute, slip on/slip off easily boots, that have rubber on the bottom. All of my work shoes have some sort of rubberized sole because I've fallen on my way into work!!

I mean they are rubber but they have no traction whatsoever. It seems you need something specially made to be worn in ice/snow/slick situations like a snow-specific boot.

Hmm, I do have snow boots. Sorel, I think. What I am really looking for is an everyday boot. Something warm. I am often wearing mary jane style black/grey almost sneakers. I guess I should probably venture out and look at some in the stores to check out grippiness. I tend to just look on-line, then one review throws me completely off. I can picture myself falling! Then I just start googling random boot stuff, so I was hoping PS would put me out out of my misery, tell me a brand, and then I would have warm feet again!

I have been doing the same thing with a laptop for a week or two now. I completely torment myself with details! I thought about starting a thread here, but I think I've finally made a decision, and my head will spin completely if I receive any more input on the laptop.

LovesVintages - do you live in an environment that uses salt or sand to keep traction on roads or sidewalks? My daughter saved and purchased a pair of genuine Uggs --- and within a day or so, the salt had damaged the boots. She purchased the Uggs spray protector as well as the full Uggs protection kit and it still did nothing to protect the boots. She says they are warm (+1) but the damage is irreversible now with the salt stains. We've been doing our best to clean them and brush and use all the google cleaning options out there...

Just wanted to mention that as another thing to consider if you are going for suede like boots and you have salt in your area...

Enerchi - Yes! We do have salt! Before I really started wanting these, I've always noticed signs at the drycleaners around here, advertising that they clean Uggs. Not sure what they could do really? My friend's daughter has them, and my friend was telling her, don't walk on the grass, don't walk on the grass!! Yeesh, they are boots, but I guess you have to be careful with them!

I'm in the minority, but I have a pair of Uggs I walk the dogs in when it's icy & I like them. Don't care if they get icky because they're for slopping around anyway. I got them for under $40 at Off Broadway, if there's one near you.

Not sure where you live or if these are just available in Canada but check out Pajar and Sauté Mouton. They are fairly serious Canadian boots but with style. I own pairs of both.

Based on the picture of the ones on amazon, I would think that ugg has slightly better grip than them. I don't have ugg or live in a snowy area, but I have these Target ones: Kalisa Short Suede Button Boot. The bottom have more grip than the amazon ones. I just took a picture of the bottom for you to see (since I am wearing them today).

My Costco sells boots identical to Uggs. Love them! I paid $30 for my pair, and plan to buy the other style they have this season when I go back.

maccers - Thanks for your response! I'm in the US. I see the Pajar on ebay (but haven't looked beyond there), and those are some serious boots!! I will defintely take a look around for both, but those may be more serious than I need! Have to tell you that I noticed your avatar before. What a pretty doggie, and pretty scenery too! Thought that might have been a photo from Europe, but now I'm assuming it's somewhere in Canada! Clever of me to figure all of that out, huh? (Suppressed the urge to say "eh?"). I keep telling my DH I want to move to Canada; Saskatchewan, actually, for no apparent reason other than I used to work with a company from there (very nice folk!) He says he wants to move to Florida.

I bought mine in store because they were out of stock online for a while, and I went to different Target looking for my size with no luck. Then one day, I was in store doing some shopping and saw the lady restocking the shelf. She asked me what color and size, and she found a whole box of grey in size 7. I guess they restocked online and in-store now.

My Uggs have traction soles and arent slippery at all. I only buy real Uggs because of the quality and because I have cold feet. These boots keep my feet warm and toasty no matter what the thermometer outside is reading. So many of the lookalikes are cheaply made with man made materials that would barely make it thru a season, let alone keep you warm. You're supposed to wear them without socks, but trust me, if you don't want stink-stank-stunk boots then wear them with lightweight socks. I live where there is plenty of snow and salt and some of my boots are in their 3rd year with no stains. I walk the dog in them and run errands, etc. My daughters boots don't have stains either. That being said, I do try to avoid wearing them when it is raining or really wet and I have a few pairs so I am not constantly wearing the same pair. They do have the boots in leather as opposed to suede (or whatever its called) so that may help you if you are concerned about staining.

I'm a creature of convenience and little time, so I ordered mine from Nordstroms, but I know they can be found for a lot less on EBay and in discount stores like TJMaxx if you have something like that where you live. I think they might be seconds or imperfects, but I'm sure you'd be hard pressed to find the imperfect part on them.

On sizing, they only come in whole sizes and they run large. I usually wear a size 7.5 to 8 in regular shoes or boots and I buy Uggs in a 7. They will feel a bit snug at first but they stretch quickly.

On the trendy part-- Uggs were trendy when they were featured on Oprah, however they've stayed popular because they are so well made and they're warm. Trendy fashion lasts for a season or two. Uggs have been in style for years, which to me, makes them not trendy unless you order the colored, sequined or leopard ones.

I buy the Costco/Kirkland brand boots too. The comparison is too close for me to spend the money on UGGS. The reviews and comparisons online are very positive. People suspect the same maker.

I've had boots in all price ranges over the years and sometimes you just have to slow down and walk like a penguin to stay on your feet.

If there's salt where you live and you want to avoid salt stains, I'd get something that is leather (not suede or nubuck) or has a bit of rubber around the lower part.

I just got new Uggs for Christmas. I had to run to the store on Christmas night (since the baby managed to run out of formula on freakin' Christmas). We had gotten 4-5 inches of snow. I stepped out the front door, my foot slipped out, and I had a nice meeting with the ground. So I can say that my Uggs don't have great traction.

The grippiest shoes I have are some trail running shoes by Salomon. They make boots, but they are more of the hiking boot variety.

Yea mine look like that, but in the photos online they are SO deceptive and look much "deeper" in the tread. Your pics look like the bottoms of mine (including the ones I have on now) and they are not very...deep in the tread. Almost flat. Just not grippy.

I mostly wear them for warmth and comfort on days that are not below 20 degrees. But I have boots for REAL warmth on the rare negative temp days or when it's snowy and stuff. I bought my first pair bec I thought they'd help for a football game....They so did not, so I was glad my dad had those foot warmer things that heat up. I thought I was going to freeze my arse off.

Do the Ugg wearers go with or without socks? I usually wear thin socks bec I don't want them to stink!

LV. Keen might make something you can work with. Their boots are more utility than fashion but they have some decent styles that are comfortable with decent traction.

I just bought my first pair of Uggs after finding a 25% off sale and I them. They are kind of hard to get on though at 32 weeks pregnant! I get winded just trying to pull them on...but they're very comfy once my feet are in!
