I''m having a very hard time understanding the different between the Knife Edge Shank and Bombe Edge Shankn in the Stuller Solstice collection. I''ve been looking for good pictures of the Bombe Edge shank online, but am coming up empty. I went to a few different jewlers today in a vain attempt to see the difference in person, but all they had were copies of the Stuller catalog which doesn''t have very good pictures. Attached is an example of both from GOG''s website - can anyone tell the different between the two? I''ve seen the same question asked before when I search, but the linked images no longer work. Thanks!

a knife edge setting has a small raised ''ridge'' through the center.
it looks like the bombe is smooth and perhaps has slightly rounded shoulders.

The bombe settings go in a bit and dip as the shank meets the head...I''m not too sure what else is different. Knife edge is normally thinner shank or with a bit of a point but it''s hard to see that in the pictures.

I've never seen the Bombe setting. Can somone post a pic so I know what it looks like?? Thanks!!!

K the first setting in that picture is the bombe and the second is the knife edge.

Here is a really blown up picture of the knife edge setting:

I am really drawn to the last image... 6 prong medium height setting (but in platinum).

Here is someone''s actual ring in that same setting (Part #15520604) in platinum:

Is it just me, or is is not very clean where the peg head comes to meet up with the knife-edge shank? Did they add some extra material to increase the ring size you think?

This I believe is unadulterated and looks great:

Those were the exact part number I am trying to decide between, except they are for the 4-prong setting.

So I can just considering the Bombe shank to be the non-Knife Edge? Its just round? I wasn''t sure if there was some different up near where the head would be.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! I could have never done any of this without this forum.

dj,
yes, the second picture you posted looks much better but i think the difference between the two is just in the lighting and angle. the first one has a lot of reflection from the fluorescent lights and it's hard to define the surfaces. the second looks like it was taken close up in a natural low light setting and is a perfect side on shot.

It looks like there IS some differences in where the head meets the shoulders, as I noted in my post up above. This is side view. Check out your first image with both the bombe and the knife edge, you can see slight differences in the SIDE VIEWS as well as how the shoulders come up and meet the head. One has a more pronounced dip. Also the side view makes it look like the bombe is 'thicker' in depth than the knife edge, it looks smaller from the side, depth of the band/shank that is.

From the top they almost look the same to me but from the side it looks different. It could just be the nuances in the shanks and rounds vs knife making it look that way. But it does look slightly different from the side to me.

yes, the bombe reminds me of the wf sleek lines solitaire. it looks like the shoulders get narrower towards the head, except that they curve up in this version instead of down.
