Bob’s Flashes – A Little History
The term diamond comes from the Greek adamas, meaning unconquerable. India was the first important source. Alluvial diamonds were found there as early as 800 B.C. Serious mining began there in the 15th century. The African mines were discovered in 1866. Brazilian fields were found in 1925. Only men wore diamonds until the mid-nineteenth century, when Agnes Sorel, mistress to King Charles VII of France, began wearing diamond jewelry. Diamond was once considered a talisman against phantoms and nightmares. It was supposed to give soldiers courage and virtue.
