I have been looking at a number of different settings online and I am currently going between the Eiros Quattrefoil and the Eiros Ivy ring... I think the tendril looks cool as well but not sure what she will think. My girlfriend is quite slender at 5'8" with long fingers and size 4 ring finger. I want something somewhat delicate with smaller diamond details and I was planning to purchase an H colour IF 0.71 Carat diamond from bluenile with Very Strong Blue fluorescence (confirmed to not be oily/milky/cloudy) to go with the ring.

It's stats are: 5.71 x 5.75 x 3.52 mm Depth 61.4, Table 57, crown 34 and pavillion 41 with a medium to slightly thick girdle for a price of $2800

I know that I cannot see the difference between internally flawless and vs2 but I went with IF because of the rarity. I don't want to spend too much more than that because she would be annoyed at me for spending a lot of money on a ring. Thoughts or suggestions on the ring or diamond?

I would rather have a high color than clarity. A D VS2 or even SI1, because color is way more visible than clarity. She could hold it next to many other rings and see the color difference immediately, but unless she carries a loupe, perfect clarity will be lost on her and others.

You might get more feedback if you provide people with links instead of everyone having to go find the settings
you are looking at.

Those settings are both very particular looks. I don't think I would get her either without her input. I like the
Vine Setting the best. I honestly don't think that other setting is very attractive at all (although she may
Like it depending on her taste) . The Quattrefoil looks like a setting a person will either love or hate but
Without her input you wont know.

I had also looked at

Sorry I didn't add them initially, didn't realize I couldn't go back and edit my post. The quattrefoil to me looks different and I am not entirely sure I like it but it seems like it may add more protection for the stone on the sides?

What other kind of jewelry does your girlfriend wear? Is she casual or more fashion-conscious? What does she do for a living?

I really don't like any of those and think they are very risky choices. Much riskier than I'd feel comfortable for a surprise ring. Of all of them the vine is the one I like best but I really think all of them will overpower a stone of the size you are looking at and that there are better choices.

In that same style: this is what I recommend for your size center: http://www.bluenile.com/solitaire-diamond-engagement-ring-platinum_19792

Or this one: http://www.bluenile.com/levalia-pave-diamond-14k-white-gold-engagement-ring_25653

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-engagement-ring-setting-platinum_12918 I love this one.

Those are nice but I am not sure if they ship to Canada, seems to be different selection on the US version of the site.

My girlfriend doesn't wear a lot of jewellery and we live in Vancouver BC so we are somewhat outdoors people - hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing kayaking etc. so I want something she can wear while doing those activities if she chooses. The Canadian version of bluenile seems to have a different selection of rings than the US site, I will have to ask if they can ship the other styles here because far larger selection.

She is somewhat fashion conscious but likes antique style jewellery.

The settings that caught your eye don't stike me as particularly delicate - they're kind of busy, and I wonder if something a bit simpler would looks more balanced with the size of centre stone that you're considering. Check out the links that Gypsy posted - those settings are very pretty and still have the diamond accents that you said you liked about the Eiros settings.

Okay let me see what would suit on the Canada site.

Okay yes, the selection is different, but this one is available, and I think it is a nice choice. AND it's durable for an active lifestyle. Having diamonds in the shank means more upkeep so a nice setting like this is a great choice for something different than the average solitaire but still lifestyle friendly.

Here are a couple others from the Canada site:

http://www.bluenile.ca/diamond-engagement-ring-white-gold_19830

http://www.bluenile.ca/scalloped-halo-diamond-engagment-ring-14k-white-gold_25649 This one is really pretty and will make the center look bigger, but isn't the best design for someone who is very active to wear all the time.

BUT if you still prefer your original choices I suggest the vine ring.

I love this one! A solitaire is a good choice for a surprise ring, especially if she is active/outdoorsy. To me, pave (little diamonds) and active don't belong in the same sentence! Plus, the Flora Vida has a few matching wedding band options, one with diamonds and one without:

Without: http://www.bluenile.ca/paltinum-wedding-ring_19915
With    : http://www.bluenile.ca/diamond-floral-platinum-ring_19899 (I'd never seent his before... it is going on my Pinterest!)

Since your girlfriend doesn't wear much jewelry and you want her to be able to wear her ring while doing the outdoor activities you mentioned (ie rock climbing), you may want to consider selecting a more simple solitaire setting with classic, clean lines and no pave diamonds. All of the rings you are considering look a bit busy to me and might look somewhat big on her slender finger. I like the rings that Gypsy has suggested, like the Flora Vida solitaire, but it may have more detail on it than what a girl with conservative tastes might like. Take a look at the jewlery your girlfriend does have and see if she prefers the traditional styles with clean lines, or the more ornate, organic shapes you are looking at now. And if you did go with a Tiffany-style solitaire, the money saved on the setting could be put toward a larger diamond!

I like the ivy and vine rings from your options best. The tendril ring is my favorite, but I wouldn't do it with a 3/4 carat diamond because the band is too wide. I find the quattrefoil ring to be horrendously ugly. Unless she has specifically said she wants that ring (and we all have different tastes, I accept that), then I would not get it.

I think the options Gypsy picked are going to look better with your size diamond, and will be much more likely to be liked. Engagement rings have to stand the test of time, so I wouldn't deviate too far from a traditional look. I like the Flora Vide, especially if you guys have an active lifestyle. Though personally if I was considering wearing my engagement ring during any of the activities you just mentioned, many of which will be terrible for jewelry, I would get one from this page: http://www.crossjewelers.com/products/dept.asp?FolderID=13 and in platinum. Quite frankly, even with those, I would never, ever wear a ring mountain biking, rock climbing, or kayaking. The risk of loss or damage, even with a ring specifically designed for an active lifestyle, is simply too great.

I like the flora vida ring that you had posted, but I think she would like http://www.bluenile.ca/diamond-engagement-ring-setting-platinum_19815 this one better... as it has a few more little diamonds set into the band (not sure why but when we have looked at rings in the past those are the styles she is drawn to) of the rings that I selected and the flora vida I just posted which do you folks think would be best. Sorry to be a bother, I just want to find something that will go well with the diamond I chose without spending more than 5k and I think I would be best off buying the setting and diamond from the same place.

Much appreciated for all the help so far!

If these are the styles she's drawn to, I like this one (the diamond Flora Vida) the most. The eiros settings are just too...overwhelming?

I like the Flora Vida Diamond ring the best, too. I think it's very pretty and unique. It sounds like you have paid close attention to the style she is drawn to, so that is what's important with your selection.
