What do you think of this diamond, which will be the center of a 3 stone setting with small sidestones (Platinum Setting with Round Diamonds (Over 1/4 ct. tw.), H SI-1, tccw 0.28c)

BlueNile
Ideal F VS2 1.16 62.1/55.0 Medium Blue ID/ID AGSL $just under 8K
HCA 1.9 (ex,ex,ex,vg)

seems like a great stone, maybe the table is a little small. I like the small sidestone look, but I''m a little worried about a F center with H sidestones.

question: what additional information do I need to make a safe purchase here? Should I order it and have it immediately appraised (is this expensive)? Should I go and buy an ideal scope?

Is the AGSL report a new generation one? ( has light performance rating on it )

As far as small table considerations, GENERALLY a smaller table will make the stone have more dispersive, spectral color and a tad less white light return. This does vary when personally viewed, based on how welll the minor facets are "aimed" at each other.

The preference of choosing white light return over color light return is a personal choice, best made by seeing stone of varying table sizes.

The AGS report is dated May 2006

I just looked it up...while it is May 2006, it is the old, non-performance based report.

If the AGSL report was dated when the new reports were available, and the old report was issued, one needs to consider why this decision was made to issue a report with less information on it.

Would AGS really do something underhanded like using an old method to hide flaws? What can I do to check on this possibility?

I mean, at least from a Holloway cut advisor standpoint, it''s a 0.9, and it is smack in the middle of the AGS Ideal candidates zone.

I think I would be happy to own an AGS ideal cut for this price. Do you think I should have bluenile send it to an appraiser, then back to them to set the e-ring?

AGS makes both reports available.

It is up to whomever submitted the diamond to AGS to make the choice of which level of report they want.

So, AGS is not being unfair here. If anyone is it is Blue Nile or the supplier to BN, whoever order the AGS report.

It could be that that decision was made based on cost, or it could be that the supplier knows the stone might not get the best rating on light performance.

As for having the stone set after it is reviewed by an appraiser, that is your choice as to what would be the best way to handle it. If you would want it checked after it is set to make sure it is the same stone, and that the work was done properly,it probably is best to see if the appraiser can have it set for you rather than shipping it around like johnny appleseed.

If you trust BN to set it, and do it well without being checked, then that''s fine too.

Bluenile emailed me and said it was the decision of their supplier.

I talked to the Pricescope recommended appraiser in San Diego, and I think I will have BN set it and then have it go to the appraiser, then to me.

I think I''m getting close to buying...

well, I bought the ring from BN and picked it up from FedEx, then I dropped it off with Thom Underwood, a PS-rec''d appraiser in San Diego. Well, since the stone has already been set in the e-ring, Thom''s appraisal really doesn''t include much except for a photocopy of the AGS cert. It will be more useful for insurance purposes than BN''s 1 page appraisal, but I didn''t really get any additional information on the stone because it was set. Thom was very professional and upfront with me, and I''d totally recommend him.

btw, I''ve resisted buying a loop so far, so... so far the ring and stones are mindclean =)

It sounds beautiful...have you taken any pics you can share with us?

Here''s a pic

Wow I really know how to bring the yellow out of a diamond. bleah. How do I take good pictures?

I don''t think that''s yellow in the diamond, it''s a reflection of light. Remember, yellow is in the prism of colors too (I think).

That''s a beautiful ring. I honestly don''t see any color in the pictures you posted, and I love the design of the ring!
