Hello again-

A little employment of my gf''s twin returned me this little factoid: She likes sapphires, although she doesn''t wear them.

She also prefers white gold to yellow gold, so that fixes the mount into either platinum/iridium/rhodium or white gold.

I don''t suppose anyone has an opinion of what a deep blue sapphire would do to a slightly yellow diamond in the H/I range... ie, can I cheat the colour to pick up a bigger rock?

Also, perception-wise, if I were to get a pair of smaller stones to place next to the center stone, would that increase the apparent size of the central stone?

I figure I have 8 months to find a stone, setting, and get it mounted before my proposal plan is complete

Thanks!

I think sapphires next to a center stone are beautiful, and do make the center stone look larger. However, I don't think you should go too low on color with a sapphire next to the diamond, because I do think any yellow is more noticeable next to the dark blue. I would stick to an H or higher.

What do you mean by Deep Blue Sapphires? Most sapphires that are "deep blue" are so dark that they are almost black.
I would think that you would want vivid medium blue. It will make the ring look richer and draw more praise.

I think that the blue makes the diamond appear whiter in contrast and think an I would be fine.
I was looking at an old style cushion cut diamond with sapphire sides and was shocked to learn it was a K.
I looked very white.

dimonbob has a very good point on the color and it is something I have noticed looking at them.

It should look fabulous in white metal, It would enahnce the H/I color to look even whiter.
Sapphires are known to look great in white gold, whereas green emeralds look great in yellow gold.
I highly recommend you to go for it,I am sure you will like the outcome.

good luck

blue sapphires will definitely enhance the appearance of a lower color diamond. they will make an h color stone look a bit whiter than it is. it is a common trick of the trade, often used with well cut h/i color stones. it will also make a ring look more substantial, without costing too terribly much, even for fine stones.

do be certain to choose sapphires that are very blue, and well cut. the ideal color is generally described as "vivid medium blue", and well cut stones should sparkle almost like a diamond.

good luck!

I agree that H would be more than fine for a sapphire ring with diamond and also maybe even a really well-cut I.

Good luck! Sounds beautiful. We have 2 members on here who have Diamonds flanked by sapphires, Patty and Diane. See if you can find their rings in the Show me the Ring forum for pictures.

Here is mine. The center diamond is 1.35c, G color, I1 clarity, 7.17 x 7.21 mms. The sapphires are 5.4mms each, 1.52c total. The setting is 18k white gold.
