So, you have a blue ray player. Question: how many stars on amazon does it have and do you agree with the reviews? How much do reviews influence your purchasing decision?

I ask because I found a great deal on one (at a local store) and bought it before reading the reviews and when reading them discovered people either love or hate it. No inbetweens. I still gave it to my DH for Christmas and told him we would exchange it for another one that has better reviews and is about $50 more (including tax). At first he said okay, but now he wants to keep it because it's been working fine (we've watched about six movies on it) and it was a lot less $.

Thoughts?

Is there a lot of issues with blue ray players freezing up, in general?

We have a Playstation 3 as our blueray player and love it, plus we can use it for games. The reviews of it are overwhelmingly positive as well.

I do take reviews into account when buying something, but I read them thoroughly and take them with a grain of salt. Sometimes things have bad reviews for reasons like Amazon not packaging them well enough!

Have you seen the player reviewed anywhere else? Amazon reviews can be hit or miss so like LP, I take them with a grain of salt. On the other hand, CNET and Consumer Reports reviews carry more weight in my book.

We have a Samsung blue ray player, but I got it for free when I got my TV. Amazon was having a special that day, if you bought a Samsung plasma over 42", you got the blue ray player as a bonus.

So far we have not had many problems with it, but one thing I do notice is that blue ray dvds can''t be played on our regular DVD player, so I stopped buying blue ray dvds.

We watch most of our TV in the family room and that has a regular dvd player.

My SIL and DD bought me a Sony Blu-Ray player and so far, so good. I don''t know what the reviews say about it, but I just increased my monthly Netflix so that I can get my movies in Blu-ray.

Which model number did you get? The one I bought is a Samsung.

We had the same samsung deal but through best buy. Butterfly 17, no blu ray players will play regular dvds as far as I know. We have the new tv and blu ray in the living room so we can play both on it :) As for quality, I don''t know what it says online but I''d give it 5 stars, I love our blu ray player! You might get a headache at first getting used to it but after a while it just seems normal to watch movies that way

The Blue Ray I got does play regular DVDs. I played a few dvds, including Serenity and 500 days of summer and both played just fine. Seems some work and some don''t.

We bought this Samsung Blu-ray Player on Black Friday. We were in the store and didn't bother to check the reviews, which aren't great, but we really love it! We use it constantly - I especially love that Netflix Instant and Pandora Radio are built into it.

ETA: And I believe most Blu-ray players will play regular DVD's, however standard DVD players will not play Blu-ray discs.

omigosh i had a total brain fart there....
what i MEANT to say was, no regular dvd players play blu rays, not the other way around lol sorry

we also have a PS3 and you can download any updates which is great.

we actually don''t own many blu ray discs, but download our movies/tv shows HD quality off the internet onto the hard drive and then stream it through the PS3. we have never had any issues with this. regarding the whole movie watching experience, it also depends what tv (quality & size) and sound system you have. we actually find that watching anything that isn''t HD hurts our eyes.

so that totally *doesn''t* answer your question regarding reviews, but we don''t have the freezing problem as we don''t play discs.
