Im new here and have my first question for the non-rookies. I''ve read several articales on Blue Nile, Excel Diamonds, GOG, James Allen etc and decided the best Tiffany Novo duplication was the Nouveau from Blue Nile. They (Brittany P.) said they dont set loose stones anymore. Too much of a reliability. I would rather not have to deal with a 3rd party since they are making the band. Is the a common practice to not mount the customers loose stone if you sell them the setting?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

It is their right, since most of their insurance coverage do not cover stones not sold by them.

Understood. If a source a third party to set the stone it wont be their stone or setting either. Why would that be any different?

They just do not want to assume the responsibility. Most jewelers will not, that is why you will need to buy your own insurance for the loose stone for setting, then some jewelers might consider doing it for you.

I don''t know that you can get insurance on an unset stone - it''s tough. Any way you can source a setting through the source of your stone?

why would you not want your 3rd party who is making your band, set your stone?

ALso check with http://www.jewelersmutual.com/FAQs.aspx#What_are_the_exclusions_to_this_policy? on insuring loose stone, it states on their website that they don't insure loose stone that WON't be set, doesnt' say anything about insuring stone WHILE setting...

I believe Blue Nile also won''t sell their settings without a stone from them too... You might want to check on that also.

I think they sell certain settings but not others.

They sell some settings in gold and plat without the diamond, but not all. I just called them about this a bit ago. Two examples they gave me that they DO sell separately are 7827 and 7837 (type them into the search box). The woman I spoke to said the only settings they sell have heads that prong in, not ones with flowingly integrated heads.

I wanted Bue nile to set the stone.

The point remains.

Their insurance most probably doesn''t cover the possibility that they chip the stone.

Note - ''most probably'' rather than ''doesn''t'' to cover my behind.

Where are you getting your stone from? Maybe they can create something very close to the setting you like.

Jeweler''s Mutual Insurance will insure the loose stone/setting as they goes through the setting process, and then afterwards insure it as 1 piece of jewelry.

Shortstop, there are other vendor''s that will set your loose stone in their setting..

What is a reasonable amout to pay a jeweler to set a stone?
Thanks

I''ve been quoted $75 and $100....more if the prongs need extra work, or there needs to be extra polishing.
