I can think of a good reason NOT to post Sarins for every stone: Not all stones are well cut. For the okay-to-lousy cuts, a Sarin would hurt, not help. And I bet there are lots of those stones. If BN did manage to educate all its customers to want excellent cuts and to find them, then the store would lose the ability to sell anything less.

What I want to know is what happened to Blue Nile's creator's love life? The article said he got turned on to the issues related to buying diamonds when buying an engagement ring himself. And yet, his profile says he's single....Maybe he hasn't found that special stone that *speaks* to him???

Hey, it's me again. Although I have enjoyed the witty reparte what I don't understand is.....why does everyone care so much about what BN does or does not do???? You either like them and want to do business with them or don't and will not purchase from them - end of story.

To me, it seems like they know what they are doing....they have been quite successful. I am sure they have done intense market research and have obviously figured out the strategy for success.

I am an advanced beginner on the diamond learning curve. I have successfully purchased a diamond online. I think (just my opinion) , that most people are still not very comfortable buying a diamond online. It scared me to death. Blue Nile has made people feel more comfortable with this concept. What made me feel alittle better was BN's reputation and their return policy. Also, their customer service (atleast for me) was outstanding. I dealt with the most helpful, informative, patient, not pushy customer service people. They never at any time asked me to spend a few thousand more to get a better stone, or did anything to make me feel like what I was spending was inadequate. They bent over backwards for me. In the end, they had what I wanted.

There is a vendor for every niche of the market. That's what makes horse racing, my friends!!! Regards,

Maybe so, bling........but on his current track, the CEO will never capture 100% of the market as he claims to want. Why--because he cannot satisfy the cut-nut shopper.....that's a segment of the market that they'll never own if they continue to do business as it's done now.

I was recently in the hunt for an ideal cut stone, and although I didn't hold out much hope with BN, I did contact them to request information on a few diamonds that looked like they could have potential.

Of the four stones I was considering, only one had the grading report available online, and it was a GIA stone so it had no crown/pav angles. I asked BN to furnish the grading reports/sarin info for the stones. When they came through - couldn't read the inclusion plots at all - there was NOTHING on them, and these were si1 stones.

I contacted BN again asking for pics of the inclusions and pics of the stones.......got a hokey answer about how they don't have the equipment to photograph stones, and anyway, *they* don't think it's important because photographs don't truly represent the stone properly anyway. What a bunch of HOGWASH!

They are one of the biggest revenue generators in diamonds today, and their response is "we don't have the equipment"? Hint - BUY IT. Several vendors smaller than BN can manage to obtain it, so I'm quite sure BN could too if they wanted to.

Pictures don't accurately represent a stone? So the party line is "we can't truly make it look 3-dimensional, so we won't try to show you anything at all?". Hogwash! Seriously, I found all the pictures of inclusions, etc provided to me by other vendors to be very informative.....those vendors willing to take the time to educate the customer on what they are seeing usually do a bang-up job, and I'm sorry, but if the small vendors can do it, there is no reason a vendor like BN cannot do it.....unless they don't want to, which I suspect is more the case.

None of these comments should be construed as applicable to the greatest bulk of BN's market.....I still maintain that it would be pointless for them to provide all that information on every stone when 90% of the market doesn't want/need/respond to it. These comments are applicable only to the comment attributable to the CEO of BN when he said that BN wants to caputre 100% of the diamond market. They aren't recognizing the elevated information needs that drive the ideal stone market, and until they become more responsive to that segment (and only that segment), they will never be a serious contender for that portion of the market.
