So I did a quick inquiry with blue nile. They have a setting i think looks nice, but i wanted it in yellow gold.
Turns out they consider any change in metal color a custom order. Which makes if final sale and to expect "one-of-a-kind item to run 20-40% or more than a mass-produced item, even if similar. "

A bit disappointing, as I am used to JA, BG or WF who would make any setting in any setting, and not charge you extra to do it. And when you consider most BN settings are only in white metal, it a bit limiting. Then theres the issue of returns.

Just something i discovered i thought id share with the group. It was news to me.

It doesn't surprise me as BN is not as personal and small a company as WF or the others. So they don't go that extra mile so to speak for tweaks on orders without minimizing their risk. They are probably just offering what they think the majority want and if for some reason you were to return that yellow gold order they might feel they don't have enough of a market wanting it in yellow gold to resell easily.

you're probably right. Not offering returns is more understandable than the up charge though, i think.

Yeah, I totally agree. The up charge seems excessive.

They probably get a discount from the ring supplier for the massive amount of settings they order for stock. A special order doesn't fall under the discount. That should explain the price difference (plus shipping, etc.).

What stone are you looking for a setting for, Niel?

The hubby felt a little bad that my chryso didn't work out so if i can sell that one he said shop for one that would fit my style more. so just preparing at this point.

so i was looking at this, and they only offer it in 18k white and plat. I just really wanted a big rich band of yellow gold, but if I have to pay 30% more might as well not even and save up for a sholdt

All those reasons make sense, I just was disappointed it wasn't more customer friendly, and as i had never heard that before, i wanted to share, in case anyone else was considering BN, just something to keep in mind.

BN seems like a huge generic company to me - that's where I started buying just before finding PS.
No matter what I picked out they said it was a great choice, and when I returned the 2 diamonds I bought they said they only got one back [both were in the same package]. Eventually it did get straightened out, but it was worrisome at the time.
Then it took something like 6-8 weeks to get a refund on a charge.

Good reason to appreciate the personal care of most of our PS vendors... :appl:

I hope you find the setting you want right away!

I see you found it :)) I would check with IDJ, I'm guessing they could get you that setting in YG.

I find it strange so many of their diamond studs are set in screw backs. Customer service said you could always order push backs, but then it's a custom order.
