LiW Blissful ignorance or tempt the fire?

I was thinking of going to do some ring-trying-on, just so I know what I like and don''t like. But then I think I''ll just be opening Pandora''s box and make this whole waiting this THAT MUCH HARDER. So to pose the question in the subject, is it better to sit in blissful ignorance or should I just go ahead and tempt the fire?

Try a few settings on. It''s better to know what you like and what looks good on your finger even if it does stoke the fire a bit. So many ladies here have said their dream rings were tossed out completely once they saw how the setting looked on their hands.

Better to be safe than sorry!

Hi there! I think generally it''s fine to try rings on, because getting an idea of what you like on your hand can become more complicated than you think before you do it. But I do also think it depends on your situation--if you''ve been together with your boyfriend for a long time and have discussed marriage, then sure. If you''ve been dating 6 weeks, that might freak him out a bit.

Any ideas yet what styles you might like? Post pictures for us if you have any--we always love looking at them!

We''ve been dating for a few years and have had the "kids, future, etc" talk already. So no worry of freaking him out. I''m just worried I''ll go ring CRAZY and it''ll consume me... oh wait, it kinda is... ha ha.

I''m not sure what I want. A part of me is thinking solitaire, but a part of me (read: big part) is TOTALLY IN LOVE with antique styles. So pretty and unique. Side question, does anyone know of any antique jewelers in Chicago? It seems like a lot of Chicago''s B&M shops are new diamonds kinda places.

Yup, I agree with Gwendolyn and Bee. I''ve been dating my boyfriend for over 3 years, and we talk about marriage all the time. We''re just not financially able to do it right now. That said, I''m actually planning on going with my best girlfriend tonight to go try on rings at a few places, just because. Will it stoke the fire? Probably. Will I tell BF that I went? Maybe...not.

Not that he''ll be freaked out, but he''ll lecture me and ask why I enjoy torturing myself.

I say do it if you want to. I love sparklies, so any excuse to go try them on is good enough for me. Right now, I''m trying to figure out what looks good on my hand so that I have it narrowed down for in the future.

That''s my story, and I''m sticking to it!

I say go for it!

I started trying on rings a few months ago and I love it! lol I couldn''t keep it a secret from my bf since I came back from the store all smiles and he knew I had been up to something! We are at the point where we live together and have had all the serious talks. I asked him if it bothered him that I tried them on, he said I could go nuts just don''t be expecting one this year.

It has helped me figure out I''m all about the solitare, I LOVE the vatche x-prong (but have only tried on a replica of it), I''m still undecided on my feelings towards halo, need to try on better examples first! I love cushion cuts, but have not been able to find a cushion solitaire yet, but am now leaning towards a RB. I also decided about 1.5 ct is perfect for size!

I just tell him that it will make his job easier when I know exactly what I want

p.s. now you have just prompted me to look at more pictures of rings when I''m supposed to be doing work!

I think you should go ahead and try rings on and figure out very GENERAL things: like
Shape?
Solitaire or sidestones?
Halo no halo?
And then: give your boyfriend the address to pricescope and a couple of pictures of what looked good on you.

That way he can do more of the work and you can put your feet up!

I liked going to try things on so I knew 100% what I wanted. You never know you might see something different and change your mind on what you want.

I agree with the others here... I say go try things on! My ''dream setting'' didn''t look so wonderful on my hand (and took up a lot of our budget). The lack of WOW! made it easier to put more money toward a stone than a particular designer setting.

From personal experience, he may see how happy all this ring/engagement stuff is making you and start escalating the process as well!

Go for it! As the other have said, you never know what the proportions will look/feel like on Your hand until its there.... I''ve actually gone and thought some stones were TOO big on my finger (I must have short knuckles or something)- but rings often take up too much room to be comfortable on my fingers.
