Alcohol Metabolism 101: There are 2 enzymes that are important in the biochemical pathway for alcohol (ethanol) metabolism: 1) alcohol dehydrogenase and 2) acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. Ethanol is first converted to acetaldehyde by alcohol dehydrogenase in the first reaction. Acetaldehyde is converted to acetate by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase in the second reaction. Asians often have an isoform of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase which is not as efficient in the breakdown of acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde can therefore build up to sufficient blood concentrations to exert the unpleasant effect of cutaneous blood vessel dilitation = flushing, redness in addition to being a direct neurotoxin.

It's in the genes. Blame your parents :P My mom once passed out from a glass of wine at a party (in addition to turning red).

hahaaha...guess the tolerance gets better with each generation? of course, at my age..who knows what my parents were like..for all i know..they could have been woopin' it up! nice..

Hey, DerekInLa

Go on, do tell, I take it you're a doc -

I'm medical as well - if we had a website like this for medical issues, it would be a fun and fantastic way for ongoing review. Problem is, I suspect I'm more interested in jewelry than medicine....

i dont think it is specific to asians, it's more likely down to genetics than anything else. i've friends (chinese males and females) who can drink like fishes and dont turn red or get drunk easily and this is from a natural tolerance to alcohol! i've also seen caucasians who get red really quick! as for me, goodness, i turn red after less than half a drink, really pathetic!

Hi Bling!
I was wondering if your puppy is a Shiba Inu (Japanese breed) or a Jindo (Korean breed)? S/he is so cute! I love both breeds and they have great personalities. I had a Jindo a number of years ago. Very loyal, protective animals.

Hi, Bling. And, goldenringlets, we *do* have an area of PS for medical issues now. It's in the same vicinity as the area for recipes and society. Visit it if you have not already done so!
