I was told these were black opals. I have never seen anything I'd consider a black opal look like any of these. Will someone please tell me their thoughts of what these are? I know a lot about diamonds, some about gemstones but hardly anything about opals. Thank you!

Based on the pictures, IMO, they're synthetic. The very least a triplet (a very thin slice (or an amalgamation of bits of opal pieces) sandwiched between a colored layer of material on the bottom and topped with a clear material)

What was the price range asked/paid for them?

Superb colouration and light play! Unless you paid thousands for those, it is surely synthetic or is at best, a doublet or triplet.

Look like Gilson or other lab-grown opal. The Chinese also have produced some plastics that look very similar, but they don't feel like a stone at all - very low density, easy to scratch, melt/burn when touched with a hot pin.

I'd bet, almost without a doubt, that those are created opals and not one bit natural at all.

Thank you all! I knew when ai saw them they were not a black opal like they were presented to be. I just couldn't say exactly what they were!
