What meaning does a birthstone have for you? Are you more likely to purchase a stone or piece of jewelry because it has your birthstone or that of a special person? Why?

I don't really get into it all that much - my birthstone is a diamond, though, so it's not like I had birthstone given to me when I was a child - or, really ever, with the exception of a tiny diamond ring my mom got me when I turned 16. Currently, I do want a sapphire/diamond ring, and part of the symbolism is that sapphire is DH's birthstone, but sapphs are also just plain beautiful. And I do love getting pearls as an anniversary gift because we were married in June (and part of why I wore pearls at the wedding). But, at the end of the day, I think the birthstone thing is just an excuse to make the jewelry more symbolic to you - a fine excuse if that floats your boat, but it's not the entire reason I would ever make a purchase of a gem.

I''ve never really cared for my birthstone - it''s citrine, and the majority tend to be sort of blah. I did have a lot of stuff with my stone in it as a child, though.

Probably the only time I will care about them is when I have kids and want to get a mothers ring

Nah, not really. Mine is amethyst, but I''m usually not a huge fan of them (I just don''t really like the color purple). I would like to get something with a sapphire and say it''s because DH''s bday is in September and we got married in September, but I really just like sapphires

I find it interesting that so many people really don''t care about birthstones yet they are pushed so hard by the industry.

Personally, I have no interest in birthstones, even though I am an october baby and I like both opals and tourmaline (but I do so on their own merits!). I find it hard to attach meaning to a list that was composed basically by the industry and that is continuously revised to include "new" gems.

Mine is garnet, and I guess I must have lucked out because I LOVE garnets. They are my favorite kinds of gems

Then again, I think it''s hard not to like garnets, they come in pretty much every color, price range, and shape.

Mine is torquoise and that is a stone I''m not a fan of, so no, I''m not likely to purchase a piece because of it being my birthstone. I buy based on what I like. (and when I just googled, seems like there are a few other stones now considered Dec. birthstones - not sure if it''s because torquoise isn''t that popular. . .regardless, I still won''t pick a stone due to any connection to when I was born.)

My birthstone is Diamond, so YES! I am MORE than happy to buy all the birthstones I can get!!!!

Birthstones do have a little meaning for me because they remind me of people I love. Specifically, garnets for my mom, aquamarine for my daughter, and ruby for my son. I tend to lean towards jewelry having these stones. I treated myself to an inexpensive aquamarine pendant on ebay recently and I love it, I think of my daughter everytime I wear it. I hope that doesn't sound silly.

eta: I think another reason is that when I was a kid my mother would make a big deal out of buying birthstone jewelry for people, and she always wore jewelry with her birthstone as well. So I guess birthstones remind me of my childhood!

Birthstones exist to grease the wheels of commerce.

I think they are a way to move less popular colours of gemstones, and make a profit on less expensive semiprecious stones. In stores often all birthstone jewelry sets are priced the same no matter if the stone is Amethyst or Emerald.

They are also a way to get men to buy jewelry without having to use their brains or consider their woman''s taste:
man: "What should I get her?" salesperson: "Do you know the month she was born?"

I think semiprecious stones are beautiful and people should wear them according to their own taste.

There are many arbitrary ways to pick which gemstone is right for you, (chakra stones, zodiac stones, stones chosen for their reported magical or healing properties etc.)why stick with stones attributed to particular months?

Mine are pearls. I lucked out, I love pearls and diamonds, and I'm more than happy to aquire them

I do agree that they're more a marketing gimmick than anything else today, though.

My birthstone is a ruby, and while I do love them, I don''t think I''m any more likely to buy something with a ruby than any other stone.

I think of birthstones like this- I LOVE mine, (I''m in december) and I have heard that I am turquoise, blue topaz, and a number of other ones. But since I LOVE all of those, I want rings with those stones not because of the month my birthday is in, but because I like the stones.

Now- I feel like the only "birthstone" rings I have seen have been from MAUL stores and the stones look like colored frozen spit. So in my mind, there is some kind of bad feelings associated with them, especially when people have them and they are rings that are not my style, etc. I have seen some pretty bad earrings/rings....

But I have to say I love almost EVERYONE''s colored stone rings I have seen regardless of the stone

Mine is amethyst, which I love in the abstract ... but I''m no more likely to buy it than I am anything else. I appreciate the historical significance, but that''s about as far as it goes ....

Same here. I''m not really a big fan of the color purple. I did get an amethyst recently though, but I didn''t want something super purply and dark - so I had Dan cut me a violetish amethyst in an asscher.

My mom''s b-stone is also an amethyst and her favorite color is purple. She''s a bit of a jewelry snob so she doesn''t like non-precious gemstones (i.e. anything that''s not an emerald, sapphire, ruby or diamond). Amethyst is the exception.

Yes. Mine is aquamarine and it''s probably the only gemstone jewelry I buy. I like other gemstones, but for some reason, they just kind of speak to me.

When I turned 13 my father bought me an aquamarine ring. It was the first piece of jewelry I owned that didn''t come from a Claire''s Boutique (or other cheesy mall store).

I have never bought into the whole birthstone marketing ploy. I am a January baby and don''t love Garnets, now a demantoid garnet I would love. I buy gems because I love them.

i like the idea of birthstones, probably because my mom had bought me a garnet set when i was a baby and gave it to me to wear to my first holiday dance (i proceeded to lose one of the earrings in the sink cwhile cleaning it a couple months later) and i love the different color varieties of garnets. i was supposed to be an amethyst baby so i do enjoy those, but i prefer the green amethysts

i haven''t bought myself any birthstone pieces though, i just window shop. someday though my rock collection from when i was younger will finally get all those pretty shiny ones

It doesn''t sound silly - it is meaningful to you. It may not be meaningful to other people, but it makes you smile - so there!

I''m an October birthday, and I have a lot of opals as well as a few tourmalines. The fact that they''re my birthstones pushes me over the edge to buy them when I''m on the fence; they become a little more special to me. But I buy plenty of stones that aren''t my birthstones as well!

Growing up, my birthstone was topaz(November). So, when I decided to purchase a birthstone ring for myself, I was surprised to find out that citrine was now the Nov birthstone. This was about 15 years ago. I now have 6 citrine rings which I love due to the fact that I love autumn colors for clothing and citrine is very complementary. But, I still wanted what I consider my true birthstone: a golden topaz. I did find one and am now looking for a ring setting. I do, however, love garnets also.
In answer to the question of purchasing simply because it''s your birthstone....I would have to love the setting it''s in; rather than it eing my birthstone.

I think they''re a bit silly. Mine is pearl but I HATE pearls. I''d much prefer just about anything else. It gets a bit old having people ask if I was born in September since I have a sapphire ring. Who cares?!? Buy what you like, not what''s ''assigned'' to you : p

My birthstone is peridot and I''ve never liked peridot, so no, it has no effect on my jewelry choices! I''ve never owned anything peridot and I probably never will. I don''t even know what the other birthstones are, so I attach no particular meaning to certain stones because it''s my husband/mother/sister''s birthstone.

I''m actually very very very attached to my birthstone. I''m a June birthday, as is my mother and my grandmother, and pearls have become very very important to us. Pearl also happens to be my grandmother''s middle name and my middle name, and I plan to pass that middle name on to my daughter (if I am so lucky as to have one). Pearl was also the first name of my great-grandmother and the middle name of one of my mother''s cousins. I don''t know if pearls became significant because it was a family name, or because of the birthstone, but now they''re pretty much inseparable from one another.

Mine is diamond.

Now while I love diamonds, it felt weird to use them as my birthstone because of their use for e-rings. When I was in high school, everyone was doing their birthstones for their class ring. I thought using a diamond would be weird (plus the class rings are supposed to be colorful), so I used a sapphire and yellow gold which were my high school colors.

Well, it turned out my college and medschool colors ended up being blue and gold. So when it came time to get a RHR, I went for a sapphire instead. It made more sense to me.

Aw, thanks Lady, you''re sweet for saying that! And I certainly like gemstones other than birthstones of family members...I absolutely love emeralds, and I don''t know anyone born in May!

Yes, mine is peridot and I finally found the perfect color! I''ve always loved green and have had some sort of peridot in my collection.

My DSIL loves peridot and has one as her ER set in platinum with diamonds.

That is a beautiful peridot. My birthstone is peridot, too. Most I've seen have a very yellow tone and don't work well with my skin tone. I've chosen other green gems to stand in. I have an emerald and a tsavorite, which get the job done
