From your pics, I actually see a cat's eye in the stone. Chrysoberyl can be that color. Why don't you take it to a local jeweler? Check out a store with a gemologist on staff.

I don't think the stone is original to the setting. The setting looks like it originally housed a heart shaped stone at one time. The current gemstone looks like it's end was cut off in order to fit into the setting. It was common for Birks to make a less expensive fashion line in 10K at one time but the workmanship was always good. Sorry to say this looks like a sloppy repair job.
