My BF and I are hitting the jewelers hard tomorrow. I have a list of things important (cut and color) to me but would love to get your help on more specific things.

Depth, table, HCA, pavillion, etc... Can you give me ranges of #''s and % to stay within.

Also, we are not opposed to pawn shops. what should I watch out for there?

Thank you!!!

Seriously, unless one is very seasoned in diamonds, that''s not the best place to go looking.

For GIA stones:

Depth 60-62.2

Table 54-58

Girdle Thin, Medium, Sightly thick, or a combo of these

Cut EX

Polish Ex or Very Good

Symmetry Ex or Very Good

For crown and pavilion angles, use this cheaters guide:

With that said, here''s a "Cliff''s Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).

Or AGS0 stones with a fairly current grading report.

If you run any (GIA) through HCA, up to 2.5 can be worthy of consideration. Have fun!!

Are you looking for rounds? I would not trust pawn shops. You can get great deals online so no need to go there since your selection will be limited, you wont know the provenance (i.e., stolen or not), and it may not come with proper documentation.
