In 2003 my oldest son was in a car accident and became brain injured. He was 18 years old at the time. It was the year from hell. It was in November, we lived in the mountains and were evacuated because of a fire, my husband was in another part of the state fighting fires there, and my son was in San Diego because he and his friends had concert tickets. Everything in me wanted to not let him go. I thought 'he is 18 and I have to start letting go sometime'.His friends family had a home there and several boys were going to be staying there. He was in the hospital in a coma for several months and as soon as our good friends Bruce and Gail heard what had happened, they rushed to the hospital a hundred miles away and scooped up our two youngest kids and kept them for a couple weeks. They took them to Disneyland and all kinds of places and kept their minds off of it. Gail's dad owned quite a few hotels and they had put us up in one of them for a couple nights before my sons accident. We had thought we would be going back up the mountain to see if our house made it through the fire. (it did).
No one in either of our families did what they did for us. They came to San Diego with their whole family and had thanksgiving dinner with us in a restaurant. I will never cease to be grateful for all they did. It brings me to tears every time I think of it.
18 years have passed and things have changed a great deal for them. Their lives have taken a drastic financial turn and things are uncertain. Bruce has stage 4 colon cancer. He is doing really really well and we are hopeful he will beat it. Our daughter and their son married each other in 2015 and we have two of the most adorable grandchildren that we share. Through this, we have been helping them as much as we can. Every time they tell us it is too much, we remind them that we can never ever do enough to repay them for all they have done for us.
The years have sometimes been tough in our friendship. Our kids marrying changed things and brought out some weird feelings and distance at times. But when things were hard, I always went over in my head all the things that they did for us during those dark days. It often changed my attitude about whatever was bothering me. I love them both and will never forget the kindness and love they showed us during that difficult time.
