Ok, so I''ve got a problem.

I''ve went to a local jewler today to check out what he had to offer. He had a .84 K VS2 round that he was selling with a tiffany mounting for 3,000. He actually came down 1,000 off the price. Its a gorgeous diamond. It faces up really white compared to some of the J''s I''ve seen at zales, kays, reeds etc...

The only thing is, I''ve been looking online and found a .84 J VS2 from GOG. Which, is the same price. The difference between the two is that GOG is certified (GOG) and the local jewlers isnt.

So, do I go for the one that I''ve seen with my own eyes and know its pretty even though its not certified?
Or, should I go with the one thats certified that I''ve only seen a picture of?

I went ahead and put the diamond on hold from the jewler. So, I''ve got until tuesday to decide. The local jewler did have a 30 return policy, upgrade policy, free cleaning, and would cover any structural setting defects.

What would yall do?
 
I would go for the GOG ring. It may sound like it's only a color down...but if it isn't certified I would say it's likely to be a few color and clarity grades off. Also how is the cut on the uncerted one? Cut is the most important factor for sparkle...and the cut on the GOG stone couldn't really be better.

GOG also offers the same things your jeweler is offering...it just doesn't sound like the local guy's stone even compares IMO.
 
Is that a Tiffany stone?

If so, they could be a very good cut and graded very strictly. That is what I gathered about Tiffany anyway.

If not, you should probably stick to GOG stone.
 
The more I think about it the more I agree. I guess I was just getting excited becuase I had the thing in my hand. Good thing I never bring money with me when I shop for big ticket items. That way I dont do something I regret.

But, if I get it from GOG and don''t like it I can always send it back right?

"Pretty though not certified" may be fine, but what should it cost?
Who knows?
It has not been graded by a reputable lab.

You cannot compare it to the GOG stone, which has a GIA report, since you don't know what it is.

The GOG diamond gets an HCA of 1.3, a super score so you know the diamond will perform well.

That local jeweler's non-certified diamond may get much lower grades from GIA than the jewler is telling you.
You just don't know.
There is a reason gem grading labs are needed.
It is your assurance of what you are paying for.

No Big Dilema here.
I'd go for the GOG stone.
 
Is the jewelers stone set in just a simple tiffany style mounting, or a true tiffany. If it''s just a generic tiffany style, I would go with GOG. At least you would have a certified stone with the same return policy. And if your budget is limited, you could still find a simple tiffany style setting very inexpensively. That diamond from GOG is gorgeous!!

No, Tiffany doesn''t sell K''s and their stones are certified.

You of course can send it back, but I guarantee that stone will be a looker! Have you ever seen a hearts on fire diamond? That is what it will look like.

I''d take bells and whistles paperwork over uncerted anyday. And with GOG''s return policy, well, it works! (altho I know what you say about having seen something you like....)

Definitely go with the GOG stone. It is better color - and the K could really be who knows what! The certification, the peace of mind of buying from a known vendor and the upgrade policy make it easy to make this call.

Enjoy your new stone - looks like a beauty!!

I agree neatfreak! I looked at a radiant corner cut ring Friday at a jewelers, that was not certified but listed as a G color on their unbranded certificate of authenticity. The diamond was brownish in color, not even faint yellow, but brownish, I would have said it was champagne, nowhere NEAR a real G. I pointed out to the jeweler the difference in the color compared to my I center stone in my engagement ring (that faces up very white) and my G side stones. It was like night and day. The jeweler told me it was just the lights in the store that made their diamond look brownish...yeah right. Then why didn''t my I stone look brown under their lights? And when we blocked the lights, the stone looked even more brown, it was downright ugly and dull! The point is, they can SAY it''s any color they want. That stone was in no way a G color, but without a credible certification there is no way to prove it.

That GOG stone is beautiful. I hope the OP gets it

I would definitely go for the GOG stone. And yes, the lowest color that Tiffany sells is an "I".
 
I would go with the stone from GOG.
