Penny for your thoughts.

To early, a lot if experts are saying there will be a fall/winter surge.
It was a political call not a science call in my opinion.

I think because we now have Covid-19 bivalent vaccine boosters, we’ve phased from pandemic to endemic.
That doesn’t mean people aren’t still getting Covid, but vaccines are evolving with variants. It was actually WHO that made the statement before Biden did.

I took it to mean the official endemic period has started.

exactly.

at a certain point, we have to stop clutching our pearls and accept that this is just how life is now. is it fair? nope. did it have to be this way? hard to say.

i don't mean to diminish the outweighed risks posed by the virus to some and the callous disregard for fellow humans that many people displayed during the early days…

but i worry that people who have an intense, lingering fear of the virus will be gripped by lifelong anxiety without better coping skills. the serenity prayer comes to mind...

+1 ... He did this because the midterms are approaching. :nono:
Gotta get voters to "feel good" about the current office-holders.

So we're supposed to think, "Oh wow! Awesome! Biden ended the pandemic!":clap:

:snooty::snooty::snooty:

I know 8 of us who just got it. Not over.

My sister went to a social gathering (outdoors, and later, inside) with perhaps eight or nine people. They visited, had a light meal, and she went home. The next day she learned that six people contracted COVID. Not sure if it was at the party or perhaps they'd had interactions prior? She, fortunately, did not end up with it. She's puzzled as everyone was visiting, breathing the same air (inside) and so on, yet only some caught it.

I'm glad she didn't! It's mysterious how it infects some and not others.

It's not over, yet I agree that it's likely entering the endemic stage.

Well one word comment.
Nope.

OK make it two more.
I wish.

COVID is still here and I suspect will be around for a long time. The pandemic - in the truest meaning of the word - is probably no longer applicable. Not to say you can't or won't get COVID but I think due to vaccinations and boosters, most won't perish from it and the numbers are far from what they were at the onset.
Everyone has their own opinion about it and what, if any, precautions they still take for themselves. However, I don't choose to live as I was in the early COVID days. I don't know when, or if, anyone would ever be able to say it is safe to go back into the world. No guarantees could ever really be given to anyone about anything and life has to go on - one way or another.

Well we can't stay in pandemic mode forever. I think things have caught up enough that this thing will be just like colds and flu's. Besides, we have to work on preventing wide spread monkey pox at this point...

Snip…

·Is the pandemic DIFFERENT? Sure.

We have vaccines & infection-induced immunity. We have treatments. We have tests (while they last). The fatality rate is way down. And so we respond to it differently.

But over?! With 400 deaths a day?!

I call malarkey.

I must say though that her opinion is just one opinion. If it resonates with you, then by all means heed it. I know of many people who have been diagnosed with COVID since the vaccination process began but I don’t know of any of them dying or be hospitalized. That is not to say that there are not still deaths occurring but in my own world, I know of none. I honestly don’t see a day anytime soon where COVID can be deemed to be eradicated as there are still people who refuse vaccination. For myself, I have chosen to live as normally as possible in spite of it all. I have been vaccinated and boosted and I might choose to wear a mask if I felt I was in unfamiliar territory. However, I realize that it only takes one correct exposure to make you sick. I just don’t believe there will be a day anytime soon when we are told there is absolutely no more risk. I think COVID and variants will be around for a long time and I intend to enjoy my life rather than be holed up at home 24/7. For me, that is not a life well lived. These are just decisions and determinations that everyone has to make for themselves. We have to accept the fact that we cannot control the entire world in which we live and face risks from many things every day. Trying to mitigate them is fine but thinking that we can somehow have complete control over our lives and environments is not realistic or healthy thinking for me.

I don't think we are in an endemic situation just yet...hopefully soon.

Not sure who is clutching their pearls and what not lol but Kenny asked for our thoughts and I shared mine.

Do I think the pandemic is over?
Nope.
Not yet.

Do I wish the pandemic was over? Absolutely. However, sadly, wishful thinking doesn't make it so.

I get and share everyone's frustration.

But I also think we can continue to live our lives and be cautious at the same time.
That definition is an individual one of course and one's person's caution could vary wildly from another's.

Wishing everyone good physical health and just as importantly good mental health.
The pandemic has taken a toll on many not just physically.
Be well.

Not over. Here's an anecdote, I was in my dd's school for a board meeting on Monday. First in person board meeting in the school in over two years. The principal attended. No one was wearing masks. 20 minutes after the meeting ended, I got a text-the principal tested positive for Covid :-o! Guess who was sitting two feet away from him...

I just tested myself (I'm negative) and will stay away from my parents until I test again on Friday.

ETA: I am not out a lot but I am generally maskless unless I am at a doctor's appointment. I am trying to enjoy my freedom now. As the weather gets colder, I anticipate a spike. When that spike occurs, I will likely revert to indoor mask wearing again.

I checked flu death's 2015-2017 (they dropped during covid years so didn't bother) to compare with covid deaths.
Looks like the range for flu deaths were 23k deaths in 2015 up to 52k deaths in 2017 compared with the 146k deaths
we are seeing from covid.

Listen, I’m perfectly content keeping to myself for the rest of my days. It’s no sacrifice to me really to wear a mask and keep my distance. But there are mannnnny people who are just not cut out for solitude. I feel bad for them. Not everyone finds it easy or is steadfast and stoic enough to maintain social distancing forever. I do think it’s time to declare an end and move forward with cautious optimism.

I don’t think this is over and am glad we have vaccines and therapeutics. I think it’s here to stay.

I loved summer because I didnt worry about Covid as we did most things outside with other people and dined at restaurants with outdoor dining. I’m hoping I feel comfortable this fall and winter. I’m still concerned about older and immune compromised family members but I felt this way before covid.

Wearing a mask indoors hasn’t bothered me. They conceal jowls extremely well LOL.

 IKR! They conceal menopausal chin whiskers too!

My thoughts are that if it does get bad this fall/winter its going to be impossible to go back.
To many people are going to say you said its over so shut up and leave me alone I'm not going back you liars I dont trust you.

I’m not sure it’s pearl clutching if I just watched my kiddo suffer with a 103-104.6 degree fever and throat so sore they couldn’t swallow for multiple days. I’m in bed myself twelve days out. Over? No, but folks have given up, especially in schools which is a breeding ground for Covid. More variants, more mutations, more unpredictability. Not looking forward to it.

Timing wise, it's about the same amount of time as the Spanish Flu
Of course that's not what would decide if it's over
I don't know what criteria is used to decide when a pandemic is over, but we're certainly closer to treating it like flu now.

The timing and context definitely makes it seem to have been a somewhat political move …

Not over. Daily case rates are up in our county compared to last month, and test positivity hovers near 10%.
I notice medical offices are still requiring that people wear masks.

We still wear masks in public indoors.
We still don't visit restaurants unless we can eat outdoors.

Not what the Dr who gave me my booster recently thinks. She said we’re going to be living with this for the foreseeable future, and thinks we’ll be having yearly jabs.
