Is there going to be a significant difference in the amount of sparkle in bezel set stud earrings versus prong set basket earrings, assuming both are H&A cut? I''m going to be getting new stud earrings and I want them to match my necklace, but wonder if the bezel will make them less sparklily.

Thanks for any opinions/experience.

Hey Michelle,

A bezel is the safest setting in terms of losing your stone and offers the most protection for the diamond. These settings cover the entire perimeter of the girdle which will have a little impact on light return around the perimeter of the stone. Make sure you get a good goldsmith to do the work, if the diamond is set too low into the setting the walls may block some of the light from entering the stone and will have an affect on light which will eminate back out the crown...It really boils down to a matter of personal preference. With security for your stone in mind the bezel setting is the safest...If you take care with your jewelry a prong setting should not be a problem if properly maintained and checked periodically...

Hmm I have heard both that it will impact and that it won't. Depends on the type of stone you get also most likely. If it's a tweaked superideal that is supposed to return 99.9% of the light back out the top of the stone, then you'd probably be fine. I love bezel's as well but I don't know, I really love to see the stone itself as well. What about something like a modified bezel where there is the ring but its very thin and then the pavilion is more in a basket?

Ewww, Mara! Great idea!

I like the half bezel look, but I worry about spin in earrings. I would constantly be looking in a mirror to make sure the bezels were both turned the right way.

Then I thought full bezel would take care of that. But the ones I've seen tend to look like buttons with diamond centers.

I also worry about diminshed light to the diamond, Michelle. Hummm!

Maybe someone with bezel set studs will chime in and help us out.

I don't think bezel set earrings lose sparkle, not those I've seen anyway when shopping. Although, I did always think the bezel setting made the stones look somewhat smaller vs. the same size stones set in a basket type setting. I do think the bezel setting is a nice look and if you want the earrings to match your necklace I'd go for it.

Thanks everyone. I just picked my pendant up from the jeweler and the diamond does sparkle nicely in the bezel setting. It's not an ideal cut stone, but close, so this gives me a rough idea. The thing is the pendant stone is only .38 and I already have .5 total weight studs and was planning to get .8-.9 total weight bezel studs to match the pendant, but now I realize my necklace looks smaller on my neck and perfect with my half carats and would look funny with the same bigger earrings. . .BUT I'm not going to tell my husband this

and still am going to get bigger earrings, just not matching bezel. So, I guess this solves this question

Now to save up for my earrings!

I'm now pushing my 10 stone ring built with all ACA's...hopefully for something like Xmas of next year!

Hey Michelle! Just pierce another hole farther up the ear lobes. Then move the smaller studs to the new holes!

That's what a jewelry clerk suggested to me earlier this evening. HeeHee

Mara,

How's your marketing pitch going? Please pass on any tips as I need as many as possible. My husband thinks I'm crazy and he mumbled something about getting me banned from this site and DT

lol

Oh, and are you thinking the 10 stone instead of the five that you mentioned the other day? Which setting are you looking at? I bet a 10 stone ACA will be out of control (lol)! VERY sparkily

Good plan, PQ. I have three piercings on my left and two on my right, but usually only just wear my diamond studs in the front. Let's see, this means I need THREE more earrings. AH, my poor husband! lol

Are you thinking of getting earrings too? I read a post the other day, but wasn't sure if you're getting some this Christmas.
