Best place in terms of visual or mechanical considerations?
Visibly, the worst place is right in the middle under the table, or a position that results in the cut of the diamond reflecting a black carbon spot so one spot appears to be many spots.
The best place, visibly, for a black carbon spot would be where a prong could hide it.
Mechanically, the worst place for a feather is near the corner of a princess since corners are prone to damage during setting.
Feather is the industry's pretty word for crack, so I try to avoid diamonds with feathers unless supply of that kind of diamond is limited.
If I do decide to buy one with a feather I try to make sure the feather is not listed as the first inclusion since the first is the most serious and grade-setting of all the listed inclusions.
A feather or crystal near the corners of a princess cut are not good because the cleavage directions of a diamond are at the corners. It is these cleavage directions which mean more princesses chip at corners than rounds whether there is a feather there or not.
A chip on a feather could cause a cavity, in my mind crystals are already in holes or cavities of diamonds although well under the surface.
A cleavage direction which can be hit on any diamond even a D Flawless can split the stone in two. I once went into a jeweller in a city and heard they had someone on the phone with a 1 and half carat diamond which had split in two.
The reason I say about crystals is that they are affecting the crystal of the stone, in fine diamonds they talk about crystal meaning how clear the stone is, I would rather have a feather at the perimeter but not pointing towards or at the girdle than a crystal in the centre of the stone.
