Best online custom ring? Recommendations? Warnings?

Hello there!

I''m new here (this forum is AWESOME! So much great info!), and am getting ready to buy an engagement ring (woo hoo!).

Anyway, so far I''m really impressed with Whiteflash, Dimend Scaasi, and James Allen for the online stores. All three can make me the custom ring I''m looking for.

I emailed each place to find out about prices, how long it would take, etc., and they seem pretty comparable. Scaasi, so far, has been the best as far as communication, even emailing me a couple times on a Sunday, which really impressed me. But otherwise I''m really have a hard time, because I''m not sure who might have the best quality, etc?

Does anyone have any recommendations, warnings, horror stories, or great experiences you could maybe share with me?

Since you have already done your ''homework'' (so to speak!) and established that they would all be comparable as far as price, ability to do what you would like, etc., then I suggest that you find out which place has the stone that you want already in house and choose that place to do it all.
Do you know what type of stone you would like?
 
I can''t afford anything *too* fancy... I''m planning on a 1.2ct Ideal / H / VS2, and a .5-ish pear on either side. It seems like they all pretty much have diamonds like that?

That sounds beautiful! May I suggest that you consider dropping clarity to an eye clean SI? It would save you some money.

I have bought twice from WF, and have been very pleased. You can do a search on here for threads on all 3 vendors. JA is awesome, Dimend Scaasi (SP) is a newer vendor to PS but have only heard good things about them. You should also check out www.goodoldgold.com I have bought from GOG as well. If I remember correctly you want to do a round with pears. WF has done that beautifully. Good luck

I just read today that Dimend Scaasi will only set diamonds you buy from them... if that means anything to you?

I haven''t heard much/anything about custom rings from good old gold... there is a a whole thread on WF custom... does anyone here have a GOG custom? I imagine jonathan would be VERY pleasant to work with, but I have seen no sorts of feedback on him other than for diamonds.
 
There are pics of GOG''s custom rings on his site. There have been a few pricescopers to come back with custom rings by them but there isn''t a thread dedicated to it like some of the other custom guys. I wouldn''t hesitate to use GOG for custom if I bought a stone from them at all.

It you talk to Isaac (the owner) they may set a stone purchased elsewhere. He''d have to look at he stone first, but I talked to him about setting my oval (back when I still had an oval, LOL!) and he was willing to do it.
 
What kind of metal do you want for your ring? If platinum, I''d ask for the 90%plat/10% iridium because it is harder and will not scratch, bend, and ding as much as the 95%. See if any of them will use that, and that would influence my personal decision. Mark Morrell uses the 90% combo, and his rings are gorgeous. If you''re going for 18K, then I''d ask for the 18k wg with palladium. Dimend Scaasi does very fine work, but I bought my diamond from GOG and would have considered using them for custom had I gone that route. I do think they have a gallery of sample rings within the setting pages. I''d narrow down who you want to make the setting and then look there for your center stone. Then that jeweler can search for the matched pair of pears for you.

Ya know, i find the metal mix topic interesting and I need to research it more. But I wore a plat. ring for 5 years..95/5 and it did develop the patina but never bent or really got scratched up. I wore it 24/7 doing everything. I seriously wouldn''t not buy a certain setting i wanted based on the plat. mix. my hubby''s ring is plat also. same for him, he wears it 24/7, does yard work, mows the lawn, built a fence, everything with the ring on. it''s a little scratched up but never bent. I know MM uses the combo and his rings are gorgous, but much has to do with his polishing technique more the just the mix of metal. it''s going to be interesting to see if different mixes will become more popular and available though.
 
Thanks mrssalvo, that makes me feel much better about moving ahead with GOG for my rings. The company that does the casting uses the 95% platinum and I was a getting a little nervous after hearing DS mention how it can get messed up easier.

danigirl, you''ll be fine, plus if i remember correctly your getting diamond eternity or semi-eternity right? if so, all you''re going to see is sparkle sparkle....
