HI:

Trying to plan summer (July) vacay--looking for good/nice/interesting places to stay in London and Paris as a family. We''ve been there before but are looking for opinions that can open up options we''ve not thought of. Thanking you in advance!!!!

cheers--Sharon

Can''t help you with Paris, but will look into the London thing. As you know, number one son lives there.

I''ll be back!

HI:

Cheers!!!

I''m assuming you want the cream of the crop as this is for a special occasion, so I''m starting off with the best. It will take me a bit longer if you want me to research smaller boutique hotels. Are you absolutely hell bent on London?

Also, if you do a search for threads by "lilthethrill", I think that''s her name. She went to London year in 2008 I believe and I posted a ton of information on that thread.

The Connaught
Claridges
The Waldorf
The Ritz
The Dorchester
The Savoy Not sure when it is re-opening after it''s £100 million re-fit, but I bet it will be fantastic.

Less well known:
The Athenaeum
The Eton Collection (small group of 3 boutique hotels)
The Royal Garden
The Langham

Here''s a list of London''s 5 star hotels You can also find a list of 4 star on this site as well. It also links to Trip Advisor for reviews.

There, that should keep you busy for a while!

Here''s the thread I mentioned earlier. There are tons of recommendations in here.

Le Meurice in Paris is quite nice. Washington Mayfair is a nice hotel for the money in London and great neighborhood.

I''m sure UK posters will fill you in soon. My first pick would be Grange Rochester hotel or any near St James Park, great shopping, the tube and magnificent views!
As for Paris I would highly recomend Jays- Paris, good location, warm towels, large rooms, the owner is always around and the service is better than Raphaels and George V. I would also make sure to take a day tour to St. Michael some of them cover Normandy & Loire Valley

drivers will provide great restaurats and routes through the city while touring.
Mountparnasse village is near the city with great artists and wine-cheese tasting, great oportunity to sign up for a french cuisine class, morning ones visit local markets, fun!
Food, Latin Quarter has better restaurants imo, Pre Verre bistro [moderate] the best lamb according to DH, I loved their roasted figs.
Reminet, right across from Notre Dame, modern with the best scallops in town, Les Petits Mitrons must be visited for rustic traditional tarts to die for. Can''t quite remember the name but if you visit Picasso''s museum, right around the corner there''s a small creamery, stop there for a great treat

Have fun!

So I was going to suggest the place my Dad and I stayed a few years ago but it seems to have gotten a makeover. No idea what their prices are like since it looks like new management, but the location was great. Its out of the city so it''s a little cheaper but theres a metro stop like 2 blocks away as well as this adorable market on the next block.

I really liked staying there

HI:

Wow--thanks for the suggestions so far! I wish we''d jumped on Claridge''s prices earlier this year--suties were going for a phenominal rate....thing is we are trying to coordinate it with a Crystal Cruise in the Med., and rooms are already booked in Europe.....

cheers--Sharon

Pret a Portea at the Berkeley Hotel in London is awesome. Who wouldn''t love drinking tea, champagne, and miniature cake replicas of Hermes Kelly bags?!?

Plus, afterwards, you can go to Harrods (slightly tipsy from the champagne) and buy whatever you want!

(Pricescope won''t let me post links to it, but seriously, look up Pret a Portea pics in Flickr- it is awesome)

Methinks Sharon will be much more at home in Harvey Nicks. How goes it Canuk-gal?

Have you thought about renting an apartment in Paris? We did that the last two times we stayed there, and would never go back to a hotel. It gives you a nice "hangout" space for everyone, and you get to shop in all the wonderful food shops and street markets. It probably only works if you''re going to stay 4 nights or more, but gives you a whole different feel for the city.

Yes!! Thanks for the tip nonetheless!! We have been in contact with homeowners already--but many of them only have queen beds....I know I am whining; but how do you sleep with a 6'' 4" guy in a queen bed???
No king beds in Europe...even three singles would be great......

So much to plan!!!

Don''t let that stop you. They have king beds in Paris! I just went on VRBO and within a minute found a 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath apartment in St. Germain that looks lovely. Master bedroom has a king bed (two twins that make a king). And the last apartment we stayed at had a king. I specifically look for that because that''s the size we''re used to as well. It''s more common to have queen size, but king beds do exist. Best of luck to you. Hope you find the perfect place!
