Best Animal Rescue To Donate To?

I also think for future birthdays/X-mases I'm going to ask for donations to animal rescues from my fam if they're okay with it. (They love giving physical presents so they may not be, but I'll try it! )

This is an excellent idea. My DH knows that this is what I always want for Valentine's Day. Even if you just get one person on board, it all helps.

So nice to learn that there are so many animal lovers on PS. I agree that you should find a local small group to donate your time, money, pet food to. I own an all natural pet food store in the suburbs of Chicago and work with many local rescue groups. I am very close with the board members and have gone with them to Chicago Animal Control to pull dogs. It is heartbreaking! There are about 600 dogs back there that the public doesn't get to see. The majority are stray pick-ups. If they aren't claimed with-in 7 days they are evaluated to either go on animal controls adoption floor, let a rescue group take them or euthanized. Most are scared and have gotten sick from stress and crappy food so are in small concrete inclosures and covered in diarrhea. Of course the staff at AC does the best they can and will hold a lovely dog as long as possible to try to get a rescue to commit to taking them. I am still wondering if anyone took a magnificent german shepherd who I saw last time I went. I wish I could have but a full house, 3 large dogs.

I have had a group doing adoption shows at my business every Saturday since October and they have adopted out 60 dogs
Very happy about this but they desperately need more foster homes. So that is a great way to help if you can.

We regulary hold fundraisers and have worked with Adopt-A-Husky, The Greyhound Alliance, Midwest Lab Rescue, Almost Home Foundation, As Good As Gold and our adoption group, Second City Canine Rescue. All of these groups are local, all volunteer run and need donations desperately.

My husband and I have also given to Best Friends and sponsored an animal thru them, it was a goat

Just to add, if you interested in volunteering but worried about the sad parts - volunteer for a local rescue. Rescues keep dogs until they get adopted, and they always need dog walkers, people to help show the dogs at adoption events, transport help (sometimes fosters can't bring dogs to events and the doggies need a ride), etc. It's fun, you meet really nice people and you get to play with adorable dogs. It's a win/win situation! The dogs definitely aren't sad - they beat they odds and they know it!

Webdiva-I agree. I volunteer at a local no kill shelter and it's a pretty nice environment. A lot of the cats are actually adopted.
