Best and Worst Cars You've Ever Owned--Points for PICS!

WORST: 2002 Land Rover Freelander. Piece O' CRAP. Left me by the side of the road more times than I can count. Including 500+ miles from home, where it had to be flatbed trucked to the local dealership. So bad they discontinued the model. CAVEAT: Early on in dating my now husband, things heated up a bit after he rescued me from one of my seemingly endless Dead Car scenarios. So, silver linings, people. SIlver linings.

Here's what I've owned and what I thought about it.
7. Mazda RX-8 2009 Grand Touring. Perfect budget sports car. Sleek and low, decent comfort and 'four' doors (nudge, nudge, wink wink) to keep your insurance rates lower, lots of features in the top of the line grand touring. But the rotary engine isn't for everyone. Fun to drive.

I've wondered how the rotary differed from other engines, please expand on this.

I have been reading up on the new Tesla Model X and have been trying to convince DH to let me reserve one for 2014... But I'm not yet convinced with how small it is. I like big SUVs, but I would like an electric car.

I need to get rid of this Escalade. It's the car I drive now and I gotta admit that it's very comfy, probably the most comfy care I have ever owned but it drives soooooooo bad.

Tacori, have you had the chance to see the X in person? Or even the S? If you haven't, I HIGHLY recommend you go check out the S if you have a Tesla store near you. It is incredibly spacious. You can fit 3 adults quite comfortably in the back seat. The trunk is MASSIVE, and then there's the frunk. Yes, the frunk. Because there's no giant gas engine, there's an extra front trunk under the hood. It's pretty amazing. And with no transmission tunnel, there's no giant hump of uselessness in the back seat. I can only imagine how much more space there will be in the X! Even though it's not *that* much bigger, I can totally see where they can make some more space from the S body. AND those SUPER SWEET Falcon-Wing doors get me EVERY TIME. We can't wait to order our S and probably will do so in December for a March delivery! SO SO SO exciting. And have you SEEN the Supercharger map?!? I'm getting SO excited!!! (We live in Michigan, so no Superchargers near us just yet...but soon! Soooooon!)
We haven't! Now I really wanna go and check it out. It was just at the top of my list but you say its pretty spacious, it makes me excited! I really really like the S, it's such a sexy looking car! I just wish I could be happy with a sedan. The only thing is that the falcon doors kinda put me off because I like to stay pretty ordinary and I feel like everyone would stare at me when I get out of the car!

what a fun awesome thread!

Worst Cadillac Escalade- It clunks allllll the time when I reverse. When it shifts gears, it does this weird downshift thing but only from 1st to 2nd and it makes another noise! PLUS ONLY 10 mpg! I don't really know why I got this car.... I also know that it was voted worst car on the road by like 3 magazines! sad....

I hate to admit it, but I really don't like the Escalades. When I used to drive my kids to school these monster cars were always trying to eat my little car, and I developed a dislike for them. Those and the Nissan Armadas.
You know whats funny is that I swear people don't see me! I know I have a huge SUV, thats why I got it! But I swear, it will be MY right of way but people will turn right in front of me and people will change lanes right into me! I mean, come on! I am in a huge honkin vehicle! SEEE MEE! hahaha

You have to wait at least 5 minutes for it to heat before you drive it. Also you never turn it off unless it has been running for at least five minutes.

The design/function burns oil. So you have to keep a couple quarts in your trunk and make sure that every second fill up or so (or every couple weeks) you check the oil and make sure you fill it.

You HAVE to run it at high RMPs about once a week. HAVE TO. It's designed that way and you have to clear out the carbon/build up/whatever.

MANY mechanics do not know how to service them. And will give you false/misleading advice. Mechanics are apparently incapable of just saying "I don't know." or "I'll have to check" ... they just shoot off and tell you something. Right or wrong.

The engine will NOT LAST at all if you don't follow the rules to keep it up and running. You HAVE to keep the service dates and make sure the engine gets the care it needs. BUT if you DO take care of it, it is more reliable than a standard engine. See below quoted from the article:

"There are several defining characteristics that differentiate a rotary engine from a typical piston engine.
Fewer Moving Parts

The rotary engine has far fewer moving parts than a comparable four-stroke piston engine. A two-rotor rotary engine has three main moving parts: the two rotors and the output shaft. Even the simplest four-cylinder piston engine has at least 40 moving parts, including pistons, connecting rods, camshaft, valves, valve springs, rockers, timing belt, timing gears and crankshaft.

This minimization of moving parts can translate into better reliability from a rotary engine. This is why some aircraft manufacturers (including the maker of Skycar) prefer rotary engines to piston engines.
Smoother

All the parts in a rotary engine spin continuously in one direction, rather than violently changing directions like the pistons in a conventional engine do. Rotary engines are internally balanced with spinning counterweights that are phased to cancel out any vibrations.

The power delivery in a rotary engine is also smoother. Because each combustion event lasts through 90 degrees of the rotor's rotation, and the output shaft spins three revolutions for each revolution of the rotor, each combustion event lasts through 270 degrees of the output shaft's rotation. This means that a single-rotor engine delivers power for three-quarters of each revolution of the output shaft. Compare this to a single-cylinder piston engine, in which combustion occurs during 180 degrees out of every two revolutions, or only a quarter of each revolution of the crankshaft (the output shaft of a piston engine).
Slower

Since the rotors spin at one-third the speed of the output shaft, the main moving parts of the engine move slower than the parts in a piston engine. This also helps with reliability."

Also it's high octaine for gas. And gets crappy gas mileage.

Basically, it's high maintenance compared to standard engines.

But it is, my husband just confirmed, his "favorite car hands down". And that makes it worthwhile.

This also explains it well (this is about the RX-8 in particular):
The three main maintenance issues with all automotive engines are the same. Carbon and varnish deposits, lubrication, and cooling.

Carbon & varnish do build up more quickly in a rotary, mainly on the cups of the rotor face and around the exhaust ports. Carbon can be more damaging to a rotary because it can damage the apex and side seals of the rotor, or even "carbon lock" the rotor (where a piece breaks off and acts like a door stop against an apex seal, completely preventing movement).

Luckily, carbon and varnish are easy to burn off. Simply rev the heck out of the motor once in a while. Rotary engines can be taken to redline and stay there with very little bad effects, unlike a piston engine. Rotary's are often used for light aircraft and the motor can run for extended periods at high RPM. A Redline a day keeps the mechanic away.

Lubrication of the Rotary is done very differently from a piston engine. The crankshaft (properly called an "eccentric shaft" in a rotary) and its bearings are lubricated by internal ports that draw oil from the pan. The interior of the motor lubricates the apex and side seals via the Oil Metering Pump (OMP), which is similar to a 2-stroke motor in that it actually injects oil into the combustion chambers.

Because you're actually consuming oil in this process this requires you to check you oil level frequently (every 2 weeks or so for normal driving). Also, it's a very good idea to change your oil more frequently (every 3000 miles) to keep the oil clean. Mazda requires that you use regular oil in the RX8. Synthetic oils are not recommended as they are designed to deter burn-off and you want an oil that WILL burn off when injected into the combustion process.

Some folks add a little extra protection by mixing a between 4 - 8 ounces of 2 cycle motor oil with their gas.

If there is one area that may cause a rotary to be considered "fragile" it's in the cooling department. NEVER overheat a rotary. Doing so will very likely cause one or both of the rotor housings to warp and essentially kill the motor.

With all this said, the Renesis rotary engine is a VERY good motor. Reports of them being fragile is mainly due to the fact that many people who buy the RX8 have no clue on how to properly maintain the engine. The majority of engine failures have been in automatic transmission models in areas of heavy traffic and high temperatures.

Most auto-box drivers drive too sedately for this car. They would never think of giving the motor some revs, so the motor carbons up. High RPM's also help lubrication by injecting more oil. Since these people putter around or sit for extended periods in slow moving traffic they were running into lubrication issues. The lube issues have been addressed in new PCM/ECU programming.

You definitely need to! The 0-60 in the S is just INCREDIBLE. And the 60-null is just as awesome. Oh goodness, I've never gotten so flustered over a car before!  :ugeek:

The falcon wings on the X are definitely not low-key, that's for sure...but they look pretty useful! I'm still waiting on pins and needles to see one of them in person...hopefully they'll bring one to Chicago soon (that's the closest store to me)!

iLander...as for electricity...many utility companies are cutting deals with owners of electric cars to charge reduced rates on electricity during certain evening hours (when they're producing electricity that's not getting consumed by users on the grid already, so basically it's just going to waste). And based on my husband's calculations, even without the reduced rate in our area (which is about 33% of the normal cost) we'll be spending 75% less on fuel for our primary vehicle. Besides...we're planning on putting up solar panels in the relatively near future...which will mean our energy is free! :appl:

Nothing fancy, but I LOVE my Honda CR-V. It is so reliable, it's never had any issues (knock on wood), and it's already over 100,000 miles. I really get why people love Honda and Toyota so much.

I used to drive a Geo Prism, and I liked that car too, especially for the *awesome* gas mileage, but it seemed like there was always an issue with it, and it added up. :$$): I will always drive a Honda from now on. I suspect a Honda minivan might be in the future.

I'm still laughing @ TC1987s car LOL
I'm glad that story made someone laugh. I had that car for almost 2 full years before I gave up on it. Honestly, it was a surreal experience the entire time. So many really odd things happened whenever I drove it. I can't even remember then all, now. I used to go through my whole litany of Toyota stories at parties and people would be in stitches, laughing. I grew up around Hudsons, and Nashes, and Pontiacs, and my father was one of those guys who gave the wife the best car in the fleet to drive, and then he, and I (female), drove his collection of stuff bought out of someone's front yards, or from salvage yards, or wherever. I am used to quirks, patches, and stuff that doesn't work quite right. But that blue Toyota was, like, from another universe or something.

I've owned a lot of really good vehicles since then. The kind that run well and don't rake you over the coals with repairs. The kind that you develop respect and affection for. Really. (It's a car-person thing, for the rest of you , haha)

Runner-up-wost was a used 1982 Ford Escort station wagon, 2-tone blue, automatic transmission, and "HO" (high output) engine, no air conditioning. I bought it for a work car for $1200. It had big dents down the sides that looked like someone smacked it with a ball bat. "HO" became my pet name for that car. I drove it from 1986 to early 1992, for local use as a work car, 6 miles per day and as the grocery-getter. I wore that car out, but it went through three cracked cylinder heads, a power steering rack, and I forget what else.

Other good ones:
  • 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Duramax LBZ RCLB (I am a bona fide "diesel douchbag," what the diesel guys call anyone who owns a diesel truck but doesn't need one. Snicker. It's mine, guys. You can't have it.)
1996 Ford Crown Vic LX (current daily driver)
1998 Ford Taurus SHO V8 (show car now)
1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo coupe 5-speed (show car, and the "TC1987")
1992 Mercury Topaz coupe (former daily driver)

Developed by a small skunk works team at Lexus and extensively tested on the race track, the F is the perfect mix of luxury and power combined in a comfortable, ridiculously well-handling small sedan. I love the fact that these cars are incredibly rare and I see other ones only once every few months. All-in-all, I couldn't be happier with my pick.

Have you ever been locked in your vehicle and can't get out?

My first truck. The frame rusted and broke in two places, so I had to junk this one. But It was a good run-around truck while it lasted. I bought this '93 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 in 2008 for $1200, from a estate, like 2 days after the man was buried. In October. His widow wanted that truck GONE and she sold it ASAP. It came with a Dale Earnhardt sticker on the back window, which I left there.

On Halloween, I went to Lowes. I always park in the Back 40 so my vehicle doesn't get dented and scratched, and from habit, did the same with this one.

I came back from the store, and unlocked the driver's door with the key. This was made prior to keyfobs and electronic locks. I climbed in and I locked the doors using the power lock button.

Then I cranked the engine. It started to turn over, then immediately died. As did all power. No power locks, no power windows, no headlights, no dome light, no starter, no horn, no nothing. Totally dead.

I yanked the door handle to get out. But the door would not unlock. So, I tried to unlock it by using the slider on the door. It probably hadn't been used in years, and it wouldn't budge. Driver's door was locked tight. So, I slid across the seat, and tried to unlock the passenger door using the slider on that door. Same problem there. Can't get either door unlocked.

So, there I sat, out in the Back 40, all by myself, in the dark, securely locked in my own truck. With NO way to get the attention of any passersby, should there actually be any passersby out in the Back 40. I had to laugh. It's Halloween, and some dead guy has locked me in his former truck, at Lowes.

I got out by beating on the lock slider with an umbrella handle until I finally got the door to unlock. What had happened: One of the battery terminals was loose, and when I initially cranked the engine, the terminal backed itself out of the battery "just enough," and the effect was the same as disconnecting the battery.

Best was my 1965 Ford Mustang. It was my first car, bought for 2k back in 1997. It had the smaller 6 cylinder engine, no frills, falling apart interior, but it just kept on running. The few small things that broke I was able to fix with the help of DH (then my high school boyfriend). I even drove back and forth from college several times, a 5 hour drive. I kept it for 11 years, and sold it in 2008 for 4k, double what I paid and it looked a lot worse than when I bought it.

Worst car was a 1993 Plymouth Sundance. We called it the "Stupid Car". That thing sucked. If you had the A/C running you could barely get going from a stop (I would actually turn it off so as not to get run over by the cars behind me). The windows stopped working, each tire developed a bubble one by one, paint looked like hell after a year, and lots of other random stuff broke (O2 sensor, timing belt). Finally the transmission went out when it only had 85,000 miles. When I drove it to the dealer for a trade-in (in first gear the whole way), they only gave me $200. Stupid car only lasted 2 years, worst car purchase ever.

And wait, the sound of the engine wasn't enough to get you to buy the car? :) But yes I agree with you. The low growl is phenomenal. Unfortunately what you don't hear at idle, and only start to hear on the road at 3600 rpms or more is a secondary intake open up, at which point the car no longer serenades you with a low frequency humm but instead start to roar unlike any Lexus you've ever heard. Like I said, its a perfect mix of luxury and power. And as one reviewer put it "the F is like the quiet office accountant who, as you one day unexpectedly discover, has been secretly training to fight in the MMA."

As for the interior, it might just just slightly dated, but everything is exactly where I want it to be. And those bucket seats are some of the nicest and most supportive seats you could ever sit in.

And here's another one of my favorites:

Gypsy, I've never heard of a rotary engine before (but then again, I know virtually nothing about cars). It sounds high maintenance, but I'm glad your husband likes it.

Laila, your CR-V has over 100K miles on it? My husband's Prius and my Corolla do, too. Have you thought about when you'll replace the CR-V? The place we bring our cars to tells me that they go forever, but I'm getting nervous driving my car so much. Neither one of us have had any issues with our cars, just regular maintenance stuff to get done, so there's no reason to feel the way I do. Toyotas and Hondas are so comparable, so it's good to know yours is still going strong.

My husband would say that his best car would be what he drives now, his Prius. He loves it for many reasons. I'm on my third car (it was my first new car that I bought 8 years ago). I think this one's my favorite, but my other cars were great too. The only thing I didn't like about the Subaru I once had was that the maintenance seemed kind of pricey.

Fun topic! Worst car was an early 90's chevy lumina. HUGE piece of crap! Best car I have to give to my current one it's a 1999 Nissan Altima that I've managed to put 190(!!!) thousand miles on. Worst thing so far that's happened to it was cv boots and the altinator. I think I have less than 2k total in repairs over the last 10 yrs. I know it'll die soon and I'm excited to get a new car but I haven't had a car payment since 2004. I'm not lookin forward to that!!!

Ok... a lot, so I need a big car to get people out of the way. But I swear it has an opposite effect. Maybe my next car should be a Ferrari. But I'd rather have an R8 if I'm gonna get a sports car.

Maybe something in red? It's really hard to not see a red car!

True, but red is so cliche! Haha it's like look at me officer! And my red sports car! PLEASE bend me over!

@ Gypsy! Holy colossal maniacs! I had no idea a rotary engine is so freaking picky! I will never buy one now, that is ridiculous! :errrr: 150 points for that information-packed post!

@TC 1987; You're racking up the points! 450 more for the 3 pics, plus your initial 150= 600 points!! Then we get to the Halloween-worthy pickup truck story and you're at 800 points!! :appl: :appl:

@ascari2; I test-drove one of these! They are awfully fast, nice torque, decent handling, a great car! We also owned a regular IS, and they are night and day different than the ISF. The IS is so polite, it feels very removed from the steering and the acceleration, the ISF is like they took the baffles of. I didn't buy it because it just looks to young for me. It's hard to explain perforated steel peddles when you're as old as I am. 150 points for the pic, plus another 100 for posting a car I've driven!

Now what is the second car? Is that a Celica? I HAD a wonderful Celica (mentioned in my OP) I loved that car! The Boxster is the closest thing I could find that was worthy of replacing it! Another 300 points! You're at 450 points!!

@Mustang Gal; Love the old 65 Mustangs! I wish I knew someone who knew how to fix them(and had a bucket of $$), I'd restore one! 200 points for posting pics of your worst car!

@ Zoe; Prius is awesome, absolutely awesome car. These all-electric cars can't hold a candle to the Prius in terms of the engineering invention that IS that engine. Harnessing unused free energy is genius! 100 points for your DH!!

@tammy77; that's a LOT of miles on that car! Keep it, who needs a car payment when you can spend on jewelry?!! ;)

Omg! Did I really write that! Bend me over?? I meant pull me over!
iLander, I have nothing against red sports cars! I'm sorry! I just remember that most all my friend that had a red sports car would get pulled over. I would speed alllll I wanted when I borrowed my mom's minivan during high school and I never got pulled over :)

LOL! I'm just messing with you!

I wasn't offended in the least, it was funny.

Come to think of it, the last time I owned a red sports car I DID get a lot of speeding tickets! And when I was driving it home from the dealership, and I accidentally hit 70 mph (it's so smooth, I really didn't notice!) in a 50 mph zone, a cop did magically appear behind me. :errrr:

Ugh, I'm going to need to be more careful.
