Yes, you totally can. I have a pair of CK jeans I got at Marshall's for $10. My other jeans are from the limited and I got them for about $12, and hemmed them myself to save money (because I was losing weight, I didn't see the point in spending money for the hemming, which defeats the purpose of cheapo jeans).

I would say before I lost weight, I easily spent under $100 annually if you are ONLY talking clothes and makeup. I buy clothes from the clearance racks at discount stores (shirts are usually between $3-$10). I also work from home, so that is a MAJOR help. I don't wear make up every day and can wear t-shirts and comfy pants at home. I also live in SoCal, so I wear flip flops pretty well year round.

There are other things I buy, so I couldn't say I only spend $100 or less on myself a year, but on clothes and makeup, definitely possible for me.

ETA, my mom is on a fixed income, so I'd venture to say she spends less than $50 a year on herself. She NEVER buys clothes, as I've given her some new and old stuff over the years) and buys lipstick once every couple of years. I buy her face creams and some other nice things as gifts. She wears all my old shoes, insisting they are more comfortable (if I buy her new, she returns them). She cuts her own hair.

And she's gorgeous.

My favorite pair of shoes was on sale at Payless Shoes for $12 -- and I wore them for over 5 years before calling them "worn out" (I think closer to 7?)

My favorite sweater is one FI found for me when we were at Macy's-- on sale for $14

makeup? I just don't wear it.

Haircuts -- until this last one, I trimmed it myself and hadn't been to have someone else cut it since May 2004 (for my grandmother's funeral)

All depends on her priorities and what you would consider as "spending on herself" -- kitchen gadgets? new vacuum? fluffy bedding? presents for you?

Ditto to the jeans! I buy my jeans from Old Navy and haven't spent more than $3.00 each on the last 5 pairs that I've bought!

here's a story for ya.we have like 5 garbage bag full of old clothes sitting in the closet for many years and one day i said...i am going to donate it to the Salvation Army,but wife said...wait,wait,let me take a look first,b/c there might be something that still fit me... ...these are the same old clothes that we suppose of donated 8 yrs ago.and,yes they are still sitting in the closet...

My husband loves to shop for me, and I like everything he picks out, so I wouldn't be surprised if DF were like that.

I suppose it depends on geography and one's profession, but people judge you on how you dress. Nothing could persuade me to spend so little on clothing. I would rather be perceived as a competent businesswoman than save the couple grand a year it takes to pull off the wardrobe I think is appropriate. I also am not sure it's good for anyone's self-esteem to live in low-end clothes, but again, I suppose it depends on circumstances.

I dont spend much on myself, couldnt tell you the last time I bought a new shirt....I bought a new pair of jeans because the old one split open, lol, I am a tightwad, I work from home so I dont need nice clothes. I do splurge on my hair I get it cut and colored every 5 weeks, it is pricey but I like being a blonde I do pay good money for shoes, I try to walk alot and I have heel spurs so good walking shoes are a must and I replace them every 3-6 months, but other then that I seldom spend money on myself.

a nudist who has natural beauty! Not having to purchase clothes and/or make-up would help me get closer to $100 a year

But I do agree, professionalism is important. When I see business colleagues, etc, I always spend a bit of money to refresh my wardrobe. I can still do it cost effectively (love Loehmanns), because BEING a competent businesswoman is what makes people perceive that I am. Of course, part of being that competent business woman is to be tailored and look good. But I don't need to spend 100s-1000s on an outfit.

I completely agree. My best suit came from an outlet mall. I just think there is being so price-conscientious that it hurts your professional life, and, for I suppose the more fragile among us, our self-esteem. Of course, I'm not self-employed so I can't afford to say that I don't care what people think, because in my past and future professional lives, it most certainly matters, and matters a great deal.

I often see colleagues dressed a decade out of date, or in cheap-looking or ill-fitting clothes, and I think they probably don't realize what being frugal is "costing" them in unprofessional impressions.
