Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any advice and help you are able to provide me! I want to start by saying I have spent hours and hours the last several days trying to educate myself to be better prepared to buy the right diamond for my girlfriend, and this website has been of GREAT assistance. The experts here exhibit such a tremendous willingness to help new folks out, while still always maintaining civility towards each other during discussions/debates. I know that can be hard to do when a bunch of intelligent minds get together.

I am still very new to all of this and refrained from posting until I thought I had enough of a knowledge base to be able to understand your replies. I hope I am prepared enough and ask for your patience as I try to learn.

I am setting a budget of 12-15k for the center stone. We looked at diamonds for several hours one day and this is what I could tell about her preference:

Size is her biggest priority and we would like to be in the 1.6-1.75 range. Cut is my biggest priority, and I would sacrifice some size for a very beautiful diamond, but retaining as much size as possible is important to her.
Color did not seem to matter much with her, and we looked at a lot of I color diamonds that she liked.
Clarity I don't have much concern about as long as it is eye clean and doesn't detract much from the brilliance.
If she were to have to choose, she would lean towards more brilliance over more fire.
Hearts and Arrows or "super ideal" type stuff is not necessary, as she was very impressed even with lower cut quality diamonds that she was viewing. This is more of an OCD thing of mine to INTENSELY research a high $ purchase as I always do, and to make sure she gets the very best I can possibly give her.

I haven't done much searching for specific stones as I didn't really know where to start. I did find one stone that seemed to be priced lower than a lot of similar size/cut/color stones and its GIA number is 2176752107. I guess it caught my attention because it does well on the HCA, has medium fluorescense which I understand is good for an I color diamond, and has a little larger table at 60% which I assume will help insure more brilliance over fire? I can't get images of the stone so I will not buy that, but I just wanted to have something as a starting point. This way you can coach me about what can be improved on this diamond to help me understand which direction my search has to go. If you can recommend other stones, that will be greatly helpful. THANK YOU!!!

Please restate questions concisely.

Also, do you want us to pick some stones out for you? Are you okay buying online?

Recommendations (if idealscopes are not posted outright, ask for them, all the vendors provide them) also ask if any VS2 or Si1 stones are eyeclean. Any stones with fluorescence you need ask if there is any negative impact. If there isn't you are good to go.

You don't need to go down to J color, but if it is something you might consider here are some options:

It's smaller than they want, and over budget DF.

They want 1.6 and 15k max.

But this one would be a nice fit: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.687-i-si1-round-diamond-ags-104074030045

And if they are willing to consider a J, then this Blue Line Stone: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.710-j-si1-round-diamond-ags-bl-104071999088

Thanks so much for all the suggestions Gypsy! I have requested ideal scope imaging for several of those and will get back to you when I have them sent to me! Really appreciate the help.

Sorry for the long delay, as things got busy for me lately and I was waiting on some ideal scope images and pictures from various vendors. I requested several images from brilliantly engaged but no one has responded to those requests over the last couple weeks. I am sure it is due to the busy season. I have been in contact with James Allen who has been very helpful with me so far. The diamond that I am very interested in right now is at James Allen and can be found here:

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.79-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-sku-280487

I have it on hold now and am waiting on an ideal scope image that I should have monday. Another option that I am considering is this one:

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3137125.htm

Any comments on these two diamonds are appreciated. Thanks so much!

Also, yes BE is very busy. It is strongly recommended you call them. Their email, when they get busy, has issues.

Thanks again Gypsy! The setting she is interested in is pretty simple. A fairly small band (1.7-2mm) in rose gold with pave diamonds on the band. She very much prefers the pave diamonds to be exposed on the side as opposed to being set down in more of a channel. Something like this:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/james-allen-exclusive-engagement-ring-item-49519

Ideally the diamonds would wrap further around the band than they do in the James Allen ring, but that would be custom and they aren't accepting more custom requests at this time. Right now the hardest thing is finding that style in rose gold without having to do custom. There are a couple settings I like a lot locally but they are taking forever to let me know if they can be done in rose gold.

I should add, the link I posted is a cathedral setting which I kind of like, but it is not something she has stated she prefers so it is not a set requirement. One thing she does like though is white gold prongs as opposed to rose gold prongs for the center stone.

Here is the idealscope for the JA stone that I referenced above,as well as the specs on the diamond:

1.790 carat
7.76 x 7.79 x 4.82 mm
Color: I
Clarity: VS1
Depth: 61.9%
Table: 55.4%
Crown angle: 34.6*
Pavilion angle: 40.7*
LGF: 79%
Girdle- 1.8-3.7%
AGS 000
Price: $14,570 before wire discount

I am very new to this but have been looking at a TON of diamonds and reading so much to try to figure out what I am looking at. To me, this one looks pretty good compared to what I have seen so far. I have seen better ideal scopes, but all on smaller stones but still at the top of my budget. I know she doesn't want to sacrifice size, and I feel like this one is plenty big for her but should still have very good light performance.

What are your thoughts on this stone. At the price of $14,570 before the discount, is it a good buy or can I do better if I keep searching?

Nice stone.

It looks gorgeous; this would be my choice hands down

Beautiful stone and love the tiny table too!

Thanks for the reassurance guys and gals! I think I am going to pull the trigger on this one then!

I agree it's a great stone and IS.

I think you are going to be really pleased with it! :wavey:

I'm a little late to this one, but I agree, it's a nice one! That smaller table and LGF percentage should give it a pretty light display. :wavey:
