Hi Guys, I've been getting into Urban Fantasy and am now in the middle of like 7 pretty decent series.

Here are my thoughts on them, take with a grain of salt) as everyone has different pet peeves (and I've listed those that occur to me here), expectations and tolerances

I thought I was burned out on Vampires, and I am, but on BAD vampires and erotica disguised as urban fantasy. But surprisingly enough there is one vampire series here, and it's pretty darned good.

Chloe Neill- Chicagoland vampires series. The characters are mid-twenties so the series has a bit of a youthful feel but is a slightly different take on vampires and I adore the heroine so much I just ripped through these. The two titles in the series so far as: Some Girls Bite and Friday Night Bites. There is romance, but fortunately it's still developing over the books and no one just jumps into bed and mentally vanishes their clothes for a meaningless romp. In fact, to date, no sex for main character. Whew!

Seanan McGuire-- this one is the first and only book in the series. The main character is just a woman you really feel sorry for after the prologue and is guilty of some bad judgement (but slightly understandable, given her past), but the world building is really nice and I think the herione becomes a character I really liked by the end of the book, because she gets some of her own back, and finds herself again. Good read, looking forward to following books. If you like Harry Desden you will like this books, if you don't-- don't bother.

Patricia Briggs-- Mercy Thompson Series. Really liked this series a lot through the first three books and into the first chapter of the 4th. I recommend stoping there though (and not finishing the fourth book, just go read the first chapter in the book store) as the characters got really inconsistent in the 4th book and it bugged the crud out of me. The first three books can be read a great trilogy though, IMO. This series has werewolves so there is a LOT about werewolf 'psychology' and there is a rape at the very end, though (if such a thing can be said) it is avenged to the extent it can be. The author does a spin off of this series in her 'new' series-- the Alpha and Omega series, but it is much heavier on the romance and IMO, the herione is just not as interesting at all.

Iiona Andrews-- Kate Daniels Series. This was one recommended by Amazon for people who liked the Mercy Thompson series. The characters aren't as charismatic and compelling at the start IMO as the Mercy Thompson books, but I actually prefered the world, the way magic works and the 'psychology' of the books, once I got into them further to the series. Mercy grabs you at the start and pulls you in. With Kate, it wasn't till half way through the second book I realized that I was pretty hooked. The pacing is VERY different than the Mercy books. And it feels at once richer, and less fleshed out than the Mercy Series. I would try to avoid reading the two back to back though, as it is hard not to compare the two if you do. And I think each has merits and drawbacks on it's own.

The rest of the books I've been reading are urban fantasy, but more romance heavy and not as good as these, IMO. Although I did find one author in an anthology that has some promise. But her books are romance/urban fantasy. Instead of urban fantasy with a slight romantic thread (which the above are), which I prefer.

The next series I am thinking about reading is Richelle Mead's Georgina Kincaid series (starts with Succubus Blues) but I'm afraid that it would be too sex heavy so I haven't started it. Let me know if anyone's read it, and what they think of the series though.

Also any recommendations would be appreciated!

I'm also in the middle of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series, which gets raves, but that I am tiring of (I've been reading this one for a few years and wish it would end soon). I did love the first few books in this series. But it's dragging a bit for me now and I want some final closure.

I''m glad to hear you liked Rosemary and Rue. I''ve heard great things about that book and have been meaning to pick it up myself sometime soon. The sequel''s due pretty soon, I think.

Have I already recommended Carrie Vaughn''s Kitty books? They''re similar to the Mercy Thompson books. Not quite as compelling (for me), but good fun reads. Each one''s pretty self-contained so if you try the first and it''s not to your taste, you can stop there easily.

I''ve heard mixed things about Mead but have not read her work myself.

Thanks Gypsy! I''ll check them out!

I go through reading moods, and currently I''m in a post-apocalyptic/alterna-history phase. It started with Dies the Fire (seriously, Dies the Fire series and the Nantucket series, beginning with Island in the Sea of Time, both by S.M. Stirling, are my all-time favorite recommendations for people who like fantasy or alterna-history) and right now, I''m reading Weapons of Choice. Weapons of Choice is similar to the Nantucket series (temporal displacement - this time, a battle group in the Pacific in 2020 displaced to WWII era right before Midway) but much heavier on the military action, which makes it a bit slow reading for me.

I have to go look through what else I''ve been reading, but I''ll check. Thanks Gypsy!

I LOVE the Rachel Morgan books. They''re not coming out fast enough for me. Been waiting for book 8, "Black Magic Sanction" forever. Think it''s coming out next week, FINALLY!

Another vampire, werewloves, witches etc series with about 18 books involved is "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" by Laurell K. Hamiliton. The first few books were great but by the 5th, it was more of the same and I really didn''t like the way the characters were developing so took a break. I would recommend the first 4 though as they''re fun reads.

Hi BEG, the Kate Daniels series is Alterna History, so you may enjoy that. The rest aren''t. But I am going to have to check out your recommendations.

Hi Laine, I will have to go look those up. I did like Rosemary and Rue, but the herione is very much in development. She''s VERY human (though she''s only half human) and makes a lot of mistakes. I really am looking forward to the series though. I think it had a LOT of potential and that the authors writing was strong enough that the series is going to be quite good.

Hi elle, How are you? I think for me, I just prefer series that are shorter. If they end in 5-6 books. I''m usually happiest. But will be getting the newest book my Hamilton anyway. I love a few of the characters and want to check in with them.

Just downloaded a sample of Magic Bites - thanks Gypsy!

Oh more on the Fantasy, and less on the Urban Fantasy side is Karen Miller''s Godspeaker trilogy. It begins with Empress. It''s pretty dark, but what I really like is that her writing style is markedly different in the first book, Empress, and the second and third books (partly because the first book is supposed to be darker and more....primitive...? I guess). I would definitely take a look - it''s an interesting world she creates. She also has a different trilogy (Kingmaker, Kingbreaker) but I haven''t gotten around to it yet.

I''v also been reading the Assassins trilogy by Robin Hobb - I''m on the second book. Interesting first book but I''m having a hard time getting into the second book.

And Gypsy, you have an English lit background right? I think you might really appreciate Dan Simmons'' work. I love his Illium/Olympos duo (any writer who can combine sci-fi, Shakespeare and Proust and make a good book is pretty talented IMO), and his Song of Kali is just creepy.

Nerds....

BEG, I read the Kingmaker and Kingbreaker. I'd definitely skip it. The first book was good, but the second just... ruined all the best parts of the story. I don't know that I'd purchase another book by her. Although, to be fair, I had just finished my favorite series of last year (Brent Weeks) and so it greatly suffered from the comparison.

Miracles... Hi Hon. Yeah, probably. But to each their own.

Tell me how you like Hobb, it's on my To be read list. But I haven't been in the mood for it. Oh and THANK you for the Simmons recommendation. I think I'll pick that up over the weekend. Looks like a good fit for both DH and me.

Aww Gypsy...you know I''m just messin'' with you.

I love Vampires. I loved this thread, I love the way YOU write. I will probably end up reading some of these books (but I''ll probably go for the ones with more sex) However, the heroine has to be smart or even the sex is boring.

I wish you would write one of these books. ::::heavy hint::::::

Hmm I''ll keep that in mind about Karen Miller''s. I remember I read Book 1 of Godspeaker a year ago over spring break and was really drawn in but I tried re-reading it a couple weeks ago and had a harder time getting back into it.

I liked Assassin''s Apprentice by Hobb and it was pretty good, but I''m having a hard time getting myself to pick up Book 2 even though I have it.

But I really love Illium - I think you''ll like it too. It''s a very intellectual sci-fi/fantasy book and so well-written. Tell me what you think!

And Miracles, I embrace my nerdiness. I love my sci-fi books - funny enough, I really hit it off with a tax partner who was interviewing me last year at a firm because we both realized we were huge Asimov fans.

I have no idea if what I''m writing is making sense - I''m keeping an eyeball glued to the screen to watch the men''s figure skating long program as I type

Oooh, Gypsy, I''ll second that Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire is an awesome book! I think anyone who likes urban fantasy will like it. It''s crazy how detailed she gets with all the subsets of Fae people :) I''m psyched for the next installment!

I actually know someone who knows her personally which is how I discovered it, but once I picked it up I definitely couldn''t put it down.

I''m only recently a fan of urban fantasy.. when I was younger I read all my dad''s Anne McCaffrey dragon fantasy books and I loved LOTR and all that jazz, but it''s been a while... and what a refreshing, creative genre! I''m excited to check out some of these other authors you listed, so thanks!

Oh I just got the Dragonlance trilogy but haven''t started reading yet. I heard it was good though...

Ooh, thanks Gypsy...off to see what''s available on Kindle now! I''ll report back with what I liked!

OK, I got the Mercy sample and so far, it''s interesting. However, I also downloaded the Anita Blake sample, and that won out for being more engrossing off the bat so I am going to read that one first. I know from reviews here that it gets pretty awful after book 6 or so, so I''ll see how long it takes me to get sick of it. I stopped Stephanie Plum after book 8, I think.

Hi Laine, I''ve added the Kitty books to my que. http://www.amazon.com/Kitty-Midnight-Hour-Norville-Book/dp/0446616419/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_c They will probably be next after series I''m just buying today. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Demon-Angel/Meljean-Brook/e/9780425213476/?itm=1&USRI=brooks+demon and the Simmons books that BEG has recommended for DH.

T-gal, I haven''t read those, purposely. There are some themes that from what I''ve heard, I didn''t think I''d care for. And it''s one of those I''m concerned has too high an erotica threshold for me. But I''d appreciate your thoughts, since you are reading htem. I may give them a shot if you think it''s worthwhile.

Miracles, John and I are talking about a jointly written series. We''re fleshing it out now. Urban Fantasy, but set in an alta pre-industrial world (jsut starting to get indusltrualized) with two detectives as the leads. We''ll see if it gets anywhere. :-) For you.... I suggest the Chicagoland Vampire series. It was so much fun, and though there is no sex yet, when there is, it''s gonna be off the charts ridculous.

Writing is one thing, but I have no idea how to begin to start to get something published...it would be interesting to see how your series turns out Gypsy!

I read that the first 5 or so are pretty tame when it comes to sex. I have no problem with sex in books but don''t care for it to be all there is in the book. I''m figuring when it turns to p*rn, I''ll dump the series.

Gypsy, don''t bother with the Anita Blake series. I''m halfway through it and BORED. Normally I''d be done with the book by now, but I''m finding I''d rather be doing other things than reading it.
