Beauty in the eye of the beholder? Grading Question

I am utterly confused... and thought I ask for some insight.

I just bought a diamond ring that I felt was eyeclean *and mind-clean* (at least to me and based on guidelines on John''s FAQ re: eye clean stones) therefore am very happy with my purchase because it was a great deal

But because I work in the jewelry industry my jewelry is always being scrutinized

The seller''s insurance appraisal listed it as an SI1, but I have suspicions it is borderline SI2, either way the inhouse jeweler told me that the stone I got is more like an I1/I2 when he looped it. I am not questioning the value because he agreed that it was a great deal for the ring and all in all it is a pretty stone with loads of fire. I was more concerned with whether an I1/I2 can be eye clean? Of course I know many of you are going to suggest getting an independant appraiser which I am in the process of getting quotes but I thought I would collect some thoughts.

Either way I love my ring!!

Yes there are eyeclean I1's out there, I know because I own two of them

, but it can can be tricky trying to find one sometimes. If you are concerned then pursue the independant appraisal as it sounds like you are doing, does this diamond have a lab report? Also was it an in house jeweller where you work who said the diamond was lower clarity?

I am still contemplating the independant appraisal... what do you think? It is quite expensive to get these appraisals done so I am wondering whether it is really necessary since either way I will still be happy with my purchase

and it is not like I am planning to resell the ring. What do you think?

Well it depends on your comfort level suki...If it would give you some peace of mind then it could be a very good idea, especially for insurance purposes, as the more detail you can give the insurance co on your diamond the better. Clarity grading is so subjective anyway and some may be borderline on the clarity grades and your in house jeweller may or may not have particular training in grading diamonds anyway....So I would say if the appraisal would give you some reassurance to get it but whatever you do, enjoy your lovely ring! Does the diamond have a lab report?

again Lorelei, thanks for your reply! I am at work now and really should be "working" but I can''t pry myself of pricescope

The ring did not come with any certs/lab reports. It only came with a letter from her jeweler for insurance purposes so I know that the stats and estimated replacement values are off. My company''s jeweler told me the color is better than what her letter stated so so-far the stats are all over the place. I may invest on an independent appraisal in the near future as I am now very curious now...

Hehe! Most welcome! In that case it would be nice to know what you actually have, and also for insurance purposes that you can get an accurate replacement value, so the appraisal could be a very good idea.
