bartering my gf''s old engagement ring, advice?

It''s about .89 ct (probably an F VS2), but no papers. anyone have advice on how to proceed? I have $8k cash plus her ring, I''m hoping to get about $1500 for it without papers.. The plan is to get the diamond jeweler to the lowest price then present them with the other engagement ring and try to get the price down another $1000 or $1500...does that sound like a good technique?

That''s a lot of money to get on trade for an uncerted .89 IMO...have you tried selling it yourself? You might get more money that way.

You have a nice cash budget to begin with. But a jeweler that would take an uncertified stone for trade (at the last minute as a last ditch effort to bargain with) might not be the kind of place I''d want to buy from in the first place.

If someone offered you money for the stone with no strings attached take it. (If it were me I''d get it recut and then set in pendant)

I''m buying at the diamond district, they all buy diamonds. I think I''ll go to the jewelry exchange where they offered me 1500. The other ring is her previous engagement ring, we don''t want it around, better to turn it into cash.

I figured you preferred to get rid of the old stone. I just think you have more buying power with cash. And since it is uncertified you don''t know for sure the specs.

The ring is gone! Sold it at a jewelry exchange for $1100, didn''t have the cert either. It weighed .85 CTs, I''m pretty happy. Saturday I go to the diamond district to buy her stone...1.5 ct E VS2 for $9000 cash.
