I tried some Bare Minerals today and ended up buying the starter kit. I came home, took off what the girl had put on me, and tried to do it myself... but I feel like its not the same. I feel like I used way more than she did but with less coverage

Do any of you ladies have tips for me? Also, where do you use your warmth?

Thanks!

The first time I tried Bare Minerals, I stunk at getting it on right so I quit using it. While I was in a city that had an actual Bare Minerals store, I made an appointment for a consultation. She had me show her how I was applying the minerals, and I learned that I was doing a sweeping motion instead of a circular motion. Big difference in the coverage. Also, I bought a kabuki brush instead of using the brush that came with my kit and it gives me better coverage. I haven''t used the warmth so I can''t help you there. My skin is so incredibly light that I''m afraid the warmth will make me look weird.

Turn on any random channel and I''m sure you''ll find an instructional info-mercial on it.

It''s all about the circular motion. You barely need any make up, and it goes on so, so smooth. Once you get the circular motion down, you can put it on without a mirror!

I used to use warmth just where the sun would hit naturally, so a little on my cheeks, and a quick brush over the nose. I don''t use warmth any more.

Oh, and just in case you were interested in trying it, I HATED their under-eye circle stuff ("Well Rested"). It makes my undereyes yellow and gross. It''s better to just apply their regular foundation with a smaller brush that make it act more as a concealer.

deegee- I don''t think we have a Bare Minerals store anywhere near here so I got mine at Ulta. The girl who helped me didn''t explain too much what I needed to do... i guess she assumed I already knew because I told her I watched the infomercials alot. I guess I''ll go back if I can''t figure it out in a week or so.

elledizzy- I used the circular motion but maybe not enough. I usually don''t wear any face makeup... just mascara and the occasional blush/eyeshadow so I think maybe I''m nervous to really work the foundation into the skin. I''ll work on that though. Thanks for the tips on the warmth and well-rested!

Maybe i''m on the slow train, but I still haven''t tried these yet. Everyone i hear though raves about them. I have acne prone skin, and get break outs quite regularly and need a good coverage to even out my skin tones as well.. Would Bare Minerals work for that? I''m a sucker for Mac''s Studio Fix liquid foundation (i like the coverage of it) Would the Bare Minerals be the same?

Bare Minerals did a really good job for me covering up acne.. my skin has since cleared up, but I remember it doing a really good job. They have a concealer brush so you can apply a more concentrated amount to cover acne. Plus, the make up is breatheable and if you fall asleep in it, it doesnt really make you break out like regular liquid foundation used to.

To wrap up, yeah, I love this make up. I will likely not ever switch.

Elledizzy5: Thanks! We''ve all seen the infomercials, but it''s nice to hear from "real" people that it works.. And i must admit i often do fall asleep with my makeup on.. those afternoon naps get me all the time. Maybe i should start pricing out the Bare Mineral collection.

Just keep practicing with it. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it.... it's important to load the brush up with makeup (swirl and tap

) and then use the circular motion... i use small circles and apply a little pressure (buff
1.gif
not hard or anything... just more pressure than if I was applying blush or something). I use more pressure for the areas I need more coverage and less around my nose and places like that (it's easy to put too much in that area).

It's really hard to mess up with Bare Minerals... I've noticed if the foundation looks a little too "shiny" then it usually means I put it on too heavy.

I really love this makeup... it's the best I've ever used. I have really oily skin and Bare Minerals is great.

BTW... I don't use Warmth (too brown for my skin tone)... I use Glee (which is a pinker version of Warmth). I use it on my cheeks where I would use blush and I also use it on my eyelids for eyeshadow. In a pinch I've even put it on my lips (mixed with a little gloss).

I LOVE BARE MINERALS...I even wore it at my wedding!

The trick is to make sure you swirl your brush until it picks up all the powder in the lid, tap tap tap and then continious circular motion all over.

Oobiecoo, does the starter kit still have the DVD included? That will probably be helpful. IIRC, the Bare Essentials website also has videos of makeup application. It's not as good as seeing in feeling someone actually put it on you, but it's better than nothing!

ETA: Ha! It was tricky to find, buried in a random place on the website, but here is the page with the instructional videos:
http://www.bareminerals.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-BareMinerals-Site/default/HowTo-Show

There's also a Tips page:
http://bareescentuals.com/beauty-tips/

Ooobiecoo:

The first time I tried it, I mussed it up bigtime. My niece tried explaining "swirl, tap & buff" but I thought, it''s powder, I''m not listening to a 14 year old. LOL.

You have to

SWIRL, TAP, & BUFF.

SWIRL: Less is more, put a little foundation in the lid. Swirl your brush over it to get it in the bristles.

TAP: Tap your brush on the side of the lid to shake off any excess foundation so you can''t see it on the top of the bristles.

BUFF: Starting in the center of your face, buff the brush in circles out towards the edges of your face.

Thats it!

If you need more coverage, (I do, I have some dark spots) I use the concealer brush and apply to whatver I need to cover. Of course you can always repeat the swirl, tap & buff if you need to build more coverage.

Then you follow up with a dusting of Mineral Veil. Go easy on this. You can always add more.

I then add my blush or bronzer (I don''t care for warmth..I''m too fair for it)

HTH....let me know if you need more help. But I adore the stuff. I''m a total convert & have been since 2005.

Okay i went to the website, 60$?! Really?? Is it that a good deal? Or is it cheaper in stores? Or is it all the same everywhere? Questions Questions!

Thanks for all of the tips everyone! Hopefully I''ll do a better job today.

Snow: $60 really is a good deal but its the same price in stores and online. I''ve noticed that the Starter Kit is different depending on where you purchased yours. Mine from Ulta included the 3 brushes, 2 colors of foundation, warmth, glee, and mineral veil. I think the sales associate said that if I had just purchased one brush and the foundation alone then it would be about $50. Also, I''ve heard this stuff lasts a while. I don''t really have acne but I do have lots of redness in my cheeks and nose and the bare minerals did a good job of covering that without looking cakey.

The starter kit is a bit pricey, but once you start buying just your individual foundation color, its 25 dollars, but it lasts FOREVER. I bought my last one in May, I think? It''s getting close to empty, but not quite, and its the middle of October.

Oh, and I wear make up almost every day, but not EVERY day religiously. So yeah, it lasts a while!

I''m a pale girl and I LOVE warmth. You just use a teeny tiny smidge, though. It''s awesome. It makes you look so refreshed. Glowing, almost. I swoosh warmth over my cheeks, then flick the brush so it''s almost totally free of any powder, then quickly flick it over my forehead, then I close my eyes and give my lids a touch of warmth, too. I don''t think it really even shows up on my eyes, but I do it anyway. :)

The whole thing is to swirl the brush, tap tap tap (get most of it off the brush or it won''t work right), then swirl in a circular motion along your face. It doesn''t take long and I don''t have to do the tap tap tap thing more than three times because the product goes so far. It''s really true that a dab will do ya!!

Oh, Fisher just reminded me that when my mom and I were in the BE store a few days ago, the saleslady said not to take the plastic film off the Warmth -- just stick it with a pin where one of the holes in the plastic filter is. Less of it will come out so it''s easier to control how much you get in the lid and onto your brush. If they''d only told me that when I bought my starter kit...I''d imagine that taping over some of the holes would do the same thing, though, I''ve just been too lazy to do it because I don''t use Warmth very much.

My mom had a DVD that came with her starter kit...I remember because my dad and I popped it in and started making fun of the people :) but it is really informative.

I agree about the under eye concealer - I don''t think it''s very good. Even on my wedding day (when I had BE professionally done), I touched up with my tried-and-true clinique concealer before photos.

I didn''t buy the starter kit - instead, I bought a tinted mineral veil and the foundation (went to Sephora to get the right color). I use a bronzer that I love instead of warmth or a blush. I know the BE peeps want you to use the entire system, but I''m a lot more comfortable mixing it with the products I''ve been using for years.

I use mineral makeup although I don''t use the Bare Minerals brand.

I use a small brush to cover my blemishes/dark areas, and then use a kabuki brush in a circular motion over the area to blend the powder into my skin. This gives me light coverage everywhere without applying powder directly everywhere, and also hides my blemishes really nicely.

I got mine at Alta, and it''s cheaper than it is online.

OOBIECOO
I love bare minerals!!!! I use it on a daily basis and it''s and fast.
Like everyone else before me said.. you have to Swirl, tap and buff. circular motions is important.
Warmth is great for me but i know it''s a bit too much on fair skin (i''m asian and brown nicely in the sun)
I LOVE prime time (a primer prior to makeup application).
It''s a really smooth and gives your face a nice surface for which the makeup will adhere
to better. I''m not big on Mineral vail but i like Radiance, which serves the same purpose as vail.
I have oily skin and i use to use MAC. but i found that MAC was tooo heavy for my skin type.
MAC is stage makeup btw.
With bare minerals, i don''t have any breakouts. in fact... my skin has been SOOOO clear. even after the hormonal
shifts of being pregnant and delivering, my skin has been great.

i purchase all my makeup through sephora.com
they have variety and lots of freebies (trial sizes) etc. if your a member.
doesn''t cost anything to become a member and you can build points to get more free products!
the bare minerals starter kit is $60 so i think it''s comparable to many other outlets. free shipping is offered on
starter kits if anyone is in need of a new kit :)

Happy swirl, tap and buffing!!!!!!

Is it working better for you, Oobie?

The only thing I don''t like about this product is the dusty mess it can make while putting it on. I''ve gotten used to it and it''s not as bad now that I have a better "system" so it''s not so scattered out.

Oohhh - I agree about the mess. I accidentally spilled the pot of eyeliner while I was putting it on. The bad thing is that I was putting it on in the bed of my hotel room. White sheets. Baaaddd. I stupidly tried to wipe it up with a wet cloth and it turned into paste. What a mess!!! I''m surprised I didn''t get billed for the sheets and the wash cloths!

Well.... I think it is a *little* better. I still feel like the coverage isn''t the same as what I got in the store. I''ve been using the concealer brush to put foundation in the REALLY red areas but it kind of wipes away whenever I buff my whole face
33.gif
. And the other areas still look kind of red also. Overall, I feel like I look a little more even but its hard to tell. Its so frustrating!

Oobie,

I don''t do the concealer thing (I have the brush for it, but just don''t use it), but a friend of mine at work has freckles she likes to try to cover up ( I like mine and let them show ) and she uses the concealer brush after using the bigger buki brush. It works for her and you can''t tell where she has or hasn''t put on my makeup. Also, the mineral veil is my favorite thing of the whole set, because when you put that dusting on, it covers over everything and blends it all to perfection.

Hope you get comfortable with it soon (I got it for Christmas and it wasn''t until March that I really felt like I knew what I was doing, but I don''t wear it every day).

Well i looked around this weekend and it seems you can''t get Bare Minerals in Canada, atleast not where i''m residing... so I''m going to have to get the started kit online...
The site seems to indicate you get two pots of colour, one for the summer and one for the winter, to match your skin. I''m thinking i''m the second palest colour, did anyone else find a huge discrepency from what''s online and what they got?

another BE fan here!

Snow, the colors are pretty true to life. don''t know which website you''re viewing them on, but also check sephora.com and qvc.com. one of them does a pretty good job of not only posting the color, but also describing it a bit.

also, know that you can mix the shades to create one that works for you.

I love Bare Minerals also!!

They keep sending me new kits and I don''t need them. The stuff goes a long way. I need to send the unopened ones back and start buying it at the mall. I don''t need the whole kit.

Snow, I used to break out a lot and now that I use Bare Minerals...I just DON''T! Even if I happen to fall asleep without washing my face, it''s just not an issue. I love it.

Did you know you can get online and adjust the time between shipments? You need your customer # but if you don''t have it I think you can call the 800 # and they can help you with it. I get mine every 4 months and I like it because every other shipment I get a free gift (new brush, eyeshadow, etc...pretty good stuff )

I''ve used this makeup since January 2006 and I will never use anything else. It''s terrific, and it''s done wonders for my skin. I regularly get compliments on my complexion from total strangers! I love love love the True blush - it''s light and shimmery, and I feel all sparkly when I wear it. I also use a lot of the BE eye colors.

Oobiecoo, can you try an experiment to get familiar with your preferred level of coverage? Leave half your face uncovered and just apply on the other side. Take pictures of yourself as you add the makeup and gauge where you like the coverage the most by what you see in the pics. I did this when I was first getting started, and it helped. It''s similar to what the makeup artists do on the infomercials and the starter kit DVD.

Also, how much are you using and are you combining foundation colors? I mix Light and Fairly Light into one lid, making about a thumbnail-sized pile to work with as I put my face on in the morning. You may have to mix to get your perfect shade.
