Bands thinner than 2mm

I would like a pretty thin band to set my diamond in. Diamond will probably come from BN with carat size of 1.3. I think BN''s thinnest band is 2mm. I would like to go down to 1.5mm or so.

So my question(s) is:

Can I get my diamond set in the 2mm and then maybe have it shaved down by a local jeweler? Of course, this might trash the warranty.

or

Should I just get the diamond from BN and have a local jeweler set it in a band that is already 1.5mm. I''m having trouble finding bands this thin though. Anyone know of Southern California jewelers that carry something like this?

It''s hard to find because it''s not usually suggested as they can bend easily at that thickness. Just something to consider if you have an active lifestyle or are hard on your rings.

I was dead set on a super thin band (the promise ring I wore for years was 1.8mm) but I couldn''t find a thinner band than 2mm. Now I am glad, as it looks very thin in comparison to my 0.8ct stone. With a stone the size you are looking at, I honestly wouldn''t go thinner than 2mm, it would look too thin IMO. Also, I think if the band is superthin, it can make the setting look a bit ''cheap''.

I used to think, hmmm, maybe there is too much metal, but now I love looking at the buttery yellow gold and admiring it!

Also, the integrity of the setting would be compromised, I wouldn''t use a 1.5mm band to support a 0.3ct stone!

I don''t know any So.Cal. jewelers carrying settings that are under 2mm but have you considered a custom setting? I have a 1.52 cushion with a plain thin platinum band, I think it''s between 1.6 to 1.8mm. I like it but on somedays, I wish it was thinner, as I have small hands. If you''ll consider a custom job, I used Sixty East in Pasadena to re-do the head of my e-ring. Its price was reasonable and I was pleased with its work and customer service.

The reason you''re having trouble finding less than 2mm is because thinner bands are more susceptible to damage/loss.

It doesn''t take an especially hard strike to bend a thin ring out of shape. During my ''nomad'' days when I moved quite a bit, one of my rings bent just from the weight of a dresser I was carrying. That ring was a thin metal ring.

When you look at rings with melee, there''s even greater risk in thin bands. Melee means little holes in the metal, so there has to be enough metal left to maintain the structure of the shape. If rings with melee bend, it could result in loss of the diamonds.

It''s not practical for everyday use. I know what illusion you''re trying to pull off here, but I think it''s a huge risk you''re taking if you want a band less than 2mm.

If you do go through with it, choose a sturdy metal.

The common wisdom around here is that anything thinner than 2mm is too thin for daily use. I've always wondered, though, why so many of Leon's rings are as thin as 1.6mm. I'm in the process of (yet another) reset and decided on a 2mm band, but there's a part of me that wonders if I could safely go a little bit thinner.

Anyway, to the OP, whatever shank width you decide on, I definitely wouldn't buy a ring from BN and have it shaved down by another jeweler. I think you risk the ring looking a bit peculiar. If you are absolutely set on a thinner shank, I think you'll probably have to go custom.

Sorry for the threadjack, but I was wondering if the ring you're referring to here is your Leon? I know you were unhappy with it and I was wondering how everything turned out. I hope you're pleased with it now!

I have a 1.8mm LM setting and it is plenty thin, in saying that though it has some height built up in the shank so it is thicker height wise then a lot of rings out there.

Yeah, the Ritani settings are that way too. I think that is the sign of a quality thin ring. But you certainly still have to be more delicate with it than other rings.

Ditto I baby my ring and am uber careful when I pick up stuff/do anything with my left hand when I am wearing it but then again I am paranoid.

Demelza, yes, I am referring to my Leon. I just had the head redone and will to post my "after" pics over at SMTR. I''m SO much more happier than I was before, thanks so much for remembering me and asking!

The FF and I just bought a 1.8mm ring from BN, so they do have some under 2. It is the Sweetheart Micropave Ring in Platinum. I haven''t received it yet (supposed to arrive Wednesday) so I can''t say for sure how it looks. I would post pictures when I get it, but since we are not officially engaged, I am not allowed to wear it. We''re doing things a little backwards
