Bamboo dog chew - irritates throat?

Recently bought one of these for my dog and she loved it. After about 3 days she developed a cough and was lethargic. Went to vet and he said her throat was irritated and she had phlegm, but no temp. If anyone bought one of these chews did your dog have any issues? Thanks.

Bamboo breaks up into sharp fibers that it would cause irritation is not surprising even when ground up then compressed.
We were always taught to keep it away from our dogs.

yes, this doesn't sound like a good idea. Ouch! Any dog chews, if it is a digestible kind, should be given in moderation.
