One of the jewelers I saw yesterday said that princess and baguette side stones were MUCH harder to keep clean than round melee - is that true? Even if you have an ultrasonic?

and

while I have your attention I''m going to repost my light question because I really want the answer lol

Would 6 prongs, a traditional basket with 4 prongs, or a girdle bezel let in the most light? Which would block the most light? Basically, in a leaky stone, is the light coming in around the pavillion more important or the light coming in around the girdle more important?

I would think that would be true. rounds hide a lot of things better. I know asscher and other fancy geometric shape owners say their stone''s look awful when even the slightest dirty, where rounds seem to be able to handle it a bit better.

as for you second question.. I have no idea

belle? belle? paging belle?

LOL! This stone I wouldn''t say it looked bad but it loses a lot of it''s spectacular... it actually starts looking whiter and more like a bright white oval but doesn''t do the insane fire stuff as well. I was wondering though if those shapes are harder to GET clean (though it''s good to know they''re harder to keep clean too lol)

As for the second question, I''d still love an answer but I think I have figured out for myself anyway... I was tipping the stone and covering the side and realized that while the *top* stuff doesn''t need light from underneath, one of my favorite things is to watch dispersion over the big facets in a non *pop* sort of way and the light is coming from *behind* the facet and refracting so that''s not a main characteristic of its performance, it''s one of my little toys to play with so I''m going to have to keep those sides with the big facets nakey if I want to keep that. I want to keep the majority of prongage at the two ends and now I wonder if I''m stuck doing an EW because I really don''t want to anymore and I don''t know if having that long side exposed is bad... maybe if I have a split shank that is *open* between the shanks and lose all of that filigree I wanted... would the split shank help to curb damage to the girdle on the long sides? the girdle is med/sl thick - how concerned for it should I be?
<~ still fighting the urge to encase the entire thing in metal to protect it lol

Maybe I am too tired to follow along correctly...But why wouldn''t 4 prongs with the stone set N/S let in light?

It would! I was planning on having more of a wide cathedrall look though and that would cover it up for sure. Like split prongs with stuff in between them. I just don''t know that I feel comfortable with only four prongs. I was planning to do 8 - two on each corner so yeah I guess that would still let in light, I just worry about the long side being exposed on the east and west when that is where garry says most damage occurs. I''m having a hard time trusting that the diamond is harder than most things I can knock it against lol I watched this thing on discovery last night and they showed how they make rings... and the guy is like *shoving* the diamond down into the prongs and I''m like OMG!!

My EC shows every smudge.

But I still love the look of step cuts.

my omb shows every smudge too... even though it isn''t a step cut it has some ''look deeply into me'' and ''don''t touch me with your grubby paws'' qualities lol Last night I kept trying to rub a finger print off... I cleaned the top, cleaned under where the print was, turned out it was reflecting on tweedledee from tweedledum and I wasn''t even on the right side lol

I like the look of baguettes end to end but I like the sparkle of round melee... hmmmmmmm.....
