I know the economy is bad, but seriously, did these really bad things we see in the news now happen back during the depression? Really bad things. I mean, teachers killing students (as seen posted here), boys seriously beating up girls, teens attacking the elderly. What gives? Is anyone else aggravated like me? I feel so helpless regarding these things unfortunately. ETA: I try to be positive. I try. I used to love the news growing up. Now I think I have to stick to Nightline. I need to stop reading CNN

I know what you''re saying. I often wonder if it''s over-reporting or a real shift.

But then I factor in all of the natural disasters and weird weather events. It can get scary to think about!

Things like this happened back during the Depression. Leopold and Loeb and the Lindbergh baby. But now we all know what happened on the other side of the world 20 minutes after it happens.

sometimes I have to avoid the news for a little while when I can feel it wearing me down more than usual..

Yep. People are no different now than they ever were, but we do find out instantly and talk and dwell endlessly on the information that previous generations either did not have, got long after the fact, or didn''t talk about in polite company.

Same for the weather and earthquakes. We live on a geologically active planet and always have. Things are no more active than they''ve ever been, we just KNOW about it - everywhere, all the time.

My suggestion: take breaks from the fear-stoking fiction of "24 hour news". It''s tragic that a teacher in China killed children, but it has - or should have - no effect on my mental status. That sounds harsh perhaps, but I can choose to fill my mind endlessly with every tragedy that I can take in amongst the 7 billion people on the planet, or I can choose to have a bit of peace by realizing that I can''t DO much about something a half a globe away, and dwelling on that stuff all day is a recipe for an unhappy life.

Completely agree with you, Ksinger.

Merrijoy, just a few years ago when the housing market was booming and the economy was fab there was craziness. Bad things will always happen, I don''t think you can relate it entirely to the state of the economy.
