I posted early last month that i was looking for a pair of .75 each round stones to accompany my 1.20 stone in a three stone setting. I wasn''t comfortable buying the stones online and went to a large local diamond dealer. The first set of stones - which they set for me - was not the right color. The setter squeezed one of the second set of stones and it cracked. Too bad because the stones were gorgeous. I let them try again, but was not happy with the outcome.

I returned the stones and the custom setting. The owner was very nice about my return, which I am so thankful for.

Yet, I am so sad and disappointed. I tried reading and understanding what was important, but obviously I am not an expert. I am afraid to even start the search again and don''t know where to go.

Thanks for listening to my vent.

I''m sorry to hear you were disappointed but so many here have purchased their stones and settings online and are very happy with the results.
The various vendors that are mostly recommended here are Whiteflash, Good Old Gold and James Allen.
If you do look through the ''Show me the Ring forum'' you''ll see beautiful three stones, and many were made by the above vendors.

If you really want to go the local route, maybe you can tell us where you are and someone can recommend a local jeweler for you.

Thanks. When I am ready, I will look to some of the vendors you mentioned; I have read good things, especially about wt.

I can''t help to think that if someone who saw my stone couldn''t match it up, how will someone do that remotely? I need to understand the process better. Can someone enlighten me?

TIA.

I meant wf, not wt. :)

Vendors like WhiteFlash and Good Old Gold specialize in ideal cut stones. It is actualy quite easy to match up pairs if you are familiar with the numbers that are important. People on here pick out pairs of stones all the time for earrings. Let us know when you are ready to look and I am sure there will be plenty of help!

I''m so sorry about your bad experience. I can just imagine how disappointing this all is. I can also relate to your skepticism with regard to online vendors.

I can''t "convince" you that online vendors will be able to help you or will be a good choice for you, however, I can certainly recommend giving some of the trusted PS vendors a call and relaying your scenario and making them convince you that they will be able to assist. I have found that a benefit of dealing with diamond vendors in a virtual environment is that the good ones do what they can to compensate for their inability to show you in person. WF and GOG, for example, place great focus on the superior quality of their merchandise and on photography and this facilitates the ability to actually show you what you will be getting in a realistic way and, as applicable, make changes, as per your request, based on your articulated preferences.

When you''re ready, try calling these vendors and gather information about what they can do for you and you may be surprised to find that they will be able to satisfy your needs and get you your perfect setting. If you remain uncertain about online vendors, try researching locally to see if any of your local B&M''s have any of the attributes that you admire about some of the recommended online vendors.

Good luck!

If you chose to purchase from an online jeweler and to get the setting from them, they would most likely be the ones setting your diamond. So they would be seeing it and could then match it up perfectly with a pair of sidestones. This happens all of the time and if you go with one of the most popular PS vendors you are bound to be very happy with the result.

The best thing to do is to call one of the vendors, tell them what you want to accomplish, let them tell you how it''s all handled, and get a quote. Once you talk to someone in person that has come highly recommended, you may feel more comfortable. I just recently sent off my stone to be set into a pendant by WF and it all went very smoothly. So many of us have sent our diamonds to vendors and designers thousands of mile away. These vendors have reputations and a lot of happy return customers. You need to find one you are comfortable with. Good luck. Sounds like a beautiful project you are trying to complete.

If you are looking for a specific style of setting James Allen has moving 3d and normal pictures of their rings and great prices on their diamonds.

Whiteflash is great too but don''t have as good of pictures for their rings.
