A few weeks back my Mom bought a pair of princess cut earings at a local B&M total ctw 1.7. Both are E, SI1. Sorry, I don''t have any measurements of the stones available. She purchased these stones w/ tax for $5,100. She has been waiting for the appraisal from the B&M just so that she can submit to the insurance company. After a week had gone by and she still hadn''t received the appraisal she started calling the store. Finally one of the guys asked her what value she wanted them to write on the appraisal because the more they put on there the higher her premium will be. This struck her as very odd that they wanted her to name the value. Finally, she started asking some more questions and was wondering when the EGL-USA cert would be sent to her as they had discussed. Come to find out, the stones are not certified at all. Now, I understand that she should have asked to view the cert before purchasing the diamonds, but what should she do now that she knows that they flat out lied to her about the certification?

Well, I'd say she has a case for returning the stones. Or at least give the B&M the opportunity to rectify the situation by sending the stones off to be certed, at their cost. If they refuse, I'd suggest reporting them to the BBB for starters.

I'm sorry your mom is in this unfortunate situation -that can really take the joy out of a new pair of diamonds!

Did the store write the color and clarity on the sales slip they provided? Did they say on that slip they were certed by EGL?

The thing about"what value do you want?" is truly amazing, but sort of stupidly honest on their part. They sound more inept than professional. It takes two to make a mess of a purchase. Your mother bears some of the blame for not doing a diligent shopping search first, but the store sounds like a poor place to work with.

If they can be returned for a full refund, do it and begin again knowing it can be done far better. If not, then make the best of it and LEARN.

I know the store can't be blamed for my mother going into the deal with not enough information or education. But can't the dealer be responsible for "lying" to her. She has more education than some people and it is really scary to think that this B&M is telling people that their stones are EGL certified (and the consumers may or may not know enough to find proof) and that they will be sending the cert to them.....then the consumer finds out that they are not certified at all. Isn't that misprepresentation of the product the company is selling?

It is, but if you don't have anything in writing, or a witness to them stating they said EGL, they could say that they were referencing another pair of diamonds, or that perhaps she was mistaken. So, your best bet is to wither try to get them to refund, or the see if htey will send for EGL cert, and if cert doesn't match the claims they made, then they will take it back.

Another bad apple

If the stones were paid for by cc then it will be easy to force a refund. If by check more difficult, but let them know that you will be calling the local tv and radio stations if satisfaction is not forthcoming. Amazing how a little bad press, or the threat thereof can bring a quick resolution.
