Hi All.....

Back from the AGS conclave..

It was truly amazing, and lots of new information provided by many experts.

It was probably one of the best conclaves in the last few years with tons of information about the new AGS Cut grading methods.

At the conclave it was announced that the appropriate committees has approved adding square and emerald cut grading to the rounds and princess cuts. So new AGS grading system, will soon cover emeralds and asscher type cut stones, very shortly.

We got to see an amazing collection of fancy color diamonds, and also a spectacular display of some really incredible designs in a fashion show ( complete with very attractive models ) who wore some stellar designed items by some of the country''s most incredible diamond manufacturers.

Neil (Denver Appraiser), Marty- Adamasgem , Sergey, Peter Yantzer, Jim Caudill, Val ( from AGS ) and I were almost inseparable. I did get some photos, and will be posting them. Marty, Neil, Val, Sergey and I all went out for dinner one night for a lobster "pig out". Marty devoured seven lobsters... It was a pay one price type place and get all the lobsters ( and other seafood specialities) that you could "snork" up.

Got to see lots of old friends and made tons of new ones.

Sergey showed us some very interesting stuff he is planning on his portable laptop computer that show the appearance of diamonds in various environments. The work he put into this is simply amazing. The detail of how the diamond appears is just short of spectacular. You take an image of where the diamond will be, input the type and proportion file, and it produces how the diamond will look in the image you input. He had a scene of daylight in a photos where there was intense daylight in an area surrounded with mountains, and you could see just how the diamond would look, with amazing detail, even with the reflection of the surrounding mountains reflected in the table of the diamond. Sergey really is an incredibly nice guy with lots of brilliant ideas to improve and develop some amazing changes to what we already have available to us. It''s almost scary to think what incredible tools we''ll have five years from now.

The technology keeps on being more intensely develped.

A new ASET which was really nicely designed, made of metal was also on display and we got to be able to play with it. It has with it it''s own lighting source, but differs from the face down desktop ASET,in that the stones are view face up. A NEW hand held ASET was also on display and very much improved over the last hand held ASET version.

I got one of the new metal ASET models and it will be shipped out shortly and will be providing some photos of it as soon as I get it.

More later....

Thanks for the update Roc.

It would have been good to be there.
Sergey is a very deep and amazing guy. He thinks in a different plane. He also has visions of how the industry should change to move away from being a cottage industry - and many of the big diamond manufacturers are learning that they need to become his customer so that they have access to hs market wisdom also.

I am glad they have given up on the Desk top ASET.

I think it is appropriate that I now announce that we will be selling ASET scopes on-line at Ideal-scope.com for $50.

I did not want to announce that until after the Conclave as a matter of politness to the lovely folk at AGS.

ASET is a must for buying fancy shaped stones.

Given up on the Desktop ASET.....

Hi Garry.....

They have FAR FROM GIVEN UP on it. The Desktop still has the far better image than the previous hand held one, as well as the newer presentation one. The image seen in that one is very accurate, but it is really small - but the advantage is the lighting source which can be used with the Desktop to illuminate photo images very evenly. It is illuminated with LED''s which sort of "punch" the blue and make the red image a "scratch" more purplish, but a further advantage are the extra set of stands which can be used to view the ASET image on mounted stones.

Once the Presentation model I ordered arrives,I''ll be endeavoring to get photos from it, and I"ll post pics of it on this thread too. It does have a really nice set of trays to hold the stone for both rounds and squarish shapes. It also has a very attractive look being made of brushed metal finish ( aluminum ?) and a really nice box to put all the goodies it comes with in it. Great for traveling with it if one needs to do that.

The new AGS hand held ASET comes with a tray to put the diamond in so it can be viewed without holding the stone in tweezers and maybe not getting it accurately aligned. Jim said he may be making some corrections to this new model, so I am looking forward to putting it through its paces once that is done.

I''ve been using my hand held ASET since I purchased it last July from AGS at the JA show. It''s not impressive and the top section comes apart easily. Anything will be an improvement. Glad you guys enjoyed the AGS conclave. Some of us were unable to fit it into our schedules

...oh well.

I am sorry the head comes off. There was a shipment made to AGS that they needed to glue on. We believe we have solved that problem here with future deliveries.

It is more difficult to view through the hand held - because the hole needs to be very small to allow the blue head shadow effect. But we are finding it very practical. We screen large parcels of fancies first with an Ideal-scope and then select candidates with the hand held.
It is also a good idea to view the stone thru a range of titling for experianced users - somtheing that is not possible with a desk top model. This works on the basis of the AGS's grading system where stones are colored images are pixel counted thru that range of tilting.

Here is the top part of a string of these images with each photo having a 1 degree tilt. the left column is 30 degree blue and the center is 40 degree blue (The image on the right shows the fire potential)

I think the current handheld rocks for use on mounted goods.
I had people who had never even heard of such a thing sorting thru all the diamonds in their display case with it.

Hope the new one is even better
Garry which are you selling for $50?
new or old

AGS''s New Performance Grading Software.

The new software for estimating the AGS cut grade was released at the conclave last week.

Unlike the Sarin estimation of the cut grade based on the old parameters, the PGS software will consider all the characteristics based on their new grading scoring.

It does require personal inspection of the polish an symmetry by a trained gemologist, but the rest is all built into a very advanced ray tracing program that has been 7 years in the development of it.

I did get the software at the conclave and it is now installed in our computers and ready to go.

While at the moment, it is limited to rounds and princess cuts, a new update will come shortly for emerald cuts and square shaped stones. So good news is that when that occurs the square emerald cuts ( Asschers, etc ) will be able to be evaluated for their new AGS light performance cut grades.

Another neat feature of the software is that it produces an digitized ASET image that can be compared to the actual image as viewed or photographed in the ASET instruments.

It is very exciting to be able to provide this for those who seek the most accurate comparisons and confirmation of both AGS and othe lab''s report based on the new AGS cut grading systems which is not and will not be reported in the Sarin result reports.

Lobster on the plate at the table.

Neil and Marty.....
Love thse all you can eat lobster pigouts down in Florida, they were even New England/Canadian lobsters, not the Florida crayfish they call lobster down there some times.. Never have seen a place like that in Boston.. Seven about filled me up along with a few clams and shrimp in scampi.. Added about 100 points to the cholesteral count in a week..

On the technical side, had very interesting discussions with Sergey and AGS people working on the grading system as well as people from the natuaral colored diamond association who were there.

There were even a few interesting AGTA and GIA presentations I attended, and even had some fun give and take with the GIA presenters who did a very good job. Very interesting summary of gem treatments with a lot of discussion.

Billy B. from GIA must be really p**sed at me, as when I sat down at his table for lunch, he wouldn''t even respond to my hello.. absolutely PRICELESS look on his face

Garry I think the presentation model of the ASET will lend itself to a small mod to allow controlled tilt. I''ll be talking with Jim about that.
