My decision with my daughter was to wait until she asked to have her ears pierced and was responsible enough to take care of them. I don't have a problem with those who have different opinions. I do believe that people should go to someone who is skilled in using piercing needles and has sterilized equipment. Those piercing guns are full of nasty bacteria

I don't believe that quote (if it's the one I read) had anything to do with that poster's personal opinion of anyone's choice to pierce their babies ears. Merely an observation of how certain cultures and generation's views may vary on the subject. Didn't any of your older relatives ever have views that would be considered less than PC nowadays? If I am referring to the wrong post, I apologize in advance.

Yep, same as Risingsun, I think a child should be old enough to take care of her earrings and clean them, etc., before getting them pierced.

I''ve never felt the basic set of earring holes as barbaric and doing so to a baby isn''t barbaric, but as others have pointed out, issues like the baby tugging at the earrings, having discomfort when sleeping while wearing them, and also have the holes end up being lopsided all are valid concerns.

i got my daughter''s ears pierced on the day before her first birthday! i haven''t read through most of the posts here but i didn''t give it a second thought, we''ve never had any problems, she has no memory of the incident.

to each their own. you disagree with the practice - good for you. you did it to your kid - good for you.

Not barbaric in my book, but I''m not necessarily a proponent.

My ears were pierced when I was 3. I had no idea what was going on, I didn''t ask for them, and it was uncomfortable. Even so, I am not angry with my mother for having my ears pierced and I don''t think my rights were violated.

What I WOULD do differently is go to a reputable piercing shop, as Swedish Bean & others have suggested. It sounds silly, but my nose, eyebrow & lip piercings that were done by professional piercers caused me less grief and pain than my 2 sets of ear holes, both done at mall kiosks. My ears were ALWAYS infected, but my body piercings were a breeze to care for during the healing process and beyond. Nevermind correct placement..

One thing to consider: Young girls tend to lose earrings. Lost earrings = money down the drain. Because of metal allergies I wore lots of solid gold studs... and subsequently lost lots of solid gold studs. Sorry, mom.

My husband, reading over my shoulder, just said, "how can it not be barbaric? it''s self mutilation for the sake of beauty" haha - he cracks me up. He''s so much like my father in some ways. he''s mexican and I pretty much used his heritage as a good excuse to get done what I thought was adorable. He never wanted it and I didn''t have cultural pressure to do it - but also, no one looked at me funny for doing it either. I just wanted to say that hey - maybe it is barbaric but I''m not sure any of us are using the term barbaric correctly (I just looked it up). But even if it is barbaric - who really cares? Most of what humans do, whether they be culturally norm or not, can be considered idiotic. Embrace your barbaric idiocy and enjoy yourself! haha

of course *I* had mine pierced by having them squuuuuueeeeeezed real hard and then putting an orange (yes, an ORANGE) behind the ear (why you ask? Heck if I know...we were pre-teen girls...stupid to ask) and then having someone with a needle and THREAD pierce them. Hurt like heck. Crooked. Had to let them grow back and be re-done later.

But I''m not barbaric, no.
