So a few weeks ago, a sparrow I believe took over our tulips and laid her eggs . I’ve been obsessed with her and the eggs for like 2 weeks now and this morning there was babies! I’m so excited! They’re just so so cute .

There’s 4, ones just a little shy lol. The tulips looked great till I realized she was trying to build her nest , so I immediately stopped watering and they died. I like to call this “ Angry Bird “ ha ha
We were always peeking on her.

HI:

Surprised she did swoop at you! We had robins build above our front door one year, and we had to stop using it as we were routinely dive bombed!

cheers--Sharon

Luckily she’s been pretty chill. I don’t plan on looking at her 24/7 even though I want to the balcony is hers until she and the babies leave .

Those aren't sparrows. They are Juncos. I think White Winged Juncos but not certain about the type of Junco but definitely Juncos.
Congrats. You're are being honored by your garden being chosen as a safe space for avian reproduction.

Oh really? Wow! Thanks for confirming that! My friend was convinced it was a sparrow , but now I know it’s not. I feel very honored indeed

If looks could kill! 52.jpg ... good mama.

Teeny tiny dinosaurs!

When one of the babies pops up with their fuzzy little head

Ah, so cute!

We just had a baby mockingbird fledge. Just one. Speaking of Angry Birds...we couldn't walk out of the house without getting
yelled at and/or dive bombed! Kind of glad it fledged. I can still hear little chirps but I think its next door now. Let them get
barked at for a while!

Ain't nature great!

I love it!

I see Matata has identified Juncos.

I’m actually quite surprised a nest was made on the ground where it is vulnerable to predators. Where I live, sparrows nest very high: often in nests that can only be accessed by a hole, and sparrows are quite smart about avoiding predation. Juncos, apparently, not so much.

Every day a male mockingbird starts singing at three in the morning, while it’s dark. He seems to have moved to the neighboring yard this year. While I’m a little insulted, I’m also getting more sleep.

If you can get a photo of the mother bird I can tell you what it is.

It’s on my second floor balcony . I posted a pic a little up in this thread and someone said it’s a junco

Oh! That makes sense. I was slandering Junco mama, but she knows what she’s doing, and even trusts you. Nice!

Maybe a Dark Eyed Junco?

I took a photo of the mama on the nest and used my Merlin bird app to identify it and it agrees with you

I must check that out. Who knew there were bird ID apps, how cool!

Who knew there were bird ID apps,

Bonkers birders like me. The Merlin app identifies by sound or photo. I can't image what my neighbors think when I'm on a walk and waiving my phone around by the trees in their yards :eek2:

I've been watching my nest box for weeks and nada. Checked on Sunday and nada. I've noticed House Finches hanging around close to it so was hoping they'd put their stamp of approval on it. Last year was the first year I put one up and no one was interested. I felt so rejected.

Monday I noticed sticks sticking out the bottom, took a peak and there was a nest. Didn't get a look at the birds until a few minutes ago and lo and behold, their Bluebirds!!!!:kiss2: Can't wait to see whether they successfully raise a clutch. I'm sooooooooooo excited.

Oh I hope they do! I’m so obsessed watching my little bbs

@Matata Well, now I know what I’m doing this weekend! Thanks for telling me about this Merlin App, it sounds like I can use it to identify some of the mystery birds I’ve seen. My problem is they move so fast. I hope you can take photos to share w us.

I'm so jealous. I've never seen a Bluebird.

I use the Merlin app and also one called Picture Bird.
