AVR vs RB

Hi,

I am thinking of upgrading my 1.2 F, VSI, Ex/Ex/VG (symmetry) RB into something bigger that would give me a minimum 8mm spread. I am currently considering AVR and RB. I am familiar with RB and i know what she gives me under different lightings. But with AVR, i have never seen one in person so I really don't know what to expect. I have seen Jonathan's videos comparing different cuts. I like how the facets arrangement look on AVRs, especially the flower under the table. i also like the big bold flashes of light that they produce. However, all these photos and videos are magnified images of the diamonds so i'm very interested in hearing from those who own both RB and AVR, just how the two cuts perform in real life. Would you please share your opinion...

1) can you see the flowery pattern of AVR without aid?
2) how would you describe the effects of chunkier facets in AVR vs RB?
3) color question -- with chunkier facets, is the color more noticeable?
4) any other differences between the two cuts that you'd like to share?

Thank you PSers!

Yes you can see the pattern without aid. I've seen 1 carat AVR's and the patterning was immediately obvious to me.

As for the effects, you still see a lot of white light with AVRs but you will get larger flashes from the facets, unless you've seen larger faceted cuts it's hard to explain what that looks like. The movement isn't as fast, it's slower but each flash is bolder.

As for color. Yes and no. AVRs also have ideal light return so they color mask very well. But to me AVRs also look better than MRB with more warmth, it's more attractive on them than it is on MRB.

The AVR is a modern cut with chunky facets, and cut for light return. But the bigger facets do mean that they don't hide inclusions as well, so make sure with SI clarities you are using the same description as GOG with regard to eyeclean.

Personally I'd take a 2 carat AVR over a MRB.

thanks Gypsy :)

I kind of have the same dilemma. I want an AVR and have for a long time but they have never had one with the specs I want. I have only seen .60 AVR's in person so I am not sure how that translates to a 1.5+ ct stone. But my gut feeling is to think that I would love them more, even though I think my rb's have been beautiful.

Don't mean to threadjack, but I sooo hope that you find one DS! You've been wanting one ever since I came on the boards! You are much much more patient than me! ;))

Christina, you are so sweet! But I am not patient and that is why I bought another rb when there just weren't any AVR's with the specs I wanted! So now I own two rb's and absolutely have to sell one before I can buy another diamond! So I am talking to Jon, but I think I'll eventually have to go up there to see all these diamonds in person!

@christina, no worries about the thread jack ;) I'm interested in any discussion related to AVRs

@diamondseeker2006, i notice that AVRs are available on the warmer scale but i want mine in F/G. It's not only the search for higher color that's challenging, also the price that comes with it. For the size and color I want, I would have to go down significantly in clarity. And finding one that meets my price, color yet eye clean seems a mission impossible. I think i will likely end up getting a RB. (But first, i have to sell my current 1.21 to fund the new purchase).

BTW, i changed my name from elam to greenbling. you both responded to my posts before i changed name :D

I would balance out the color and clarity. Maybe go down a little in color and get VS? While I prefer G (or higher) with modern round brilliants, there are many here who have said they could go a little lower in an old style cut. Going to F color makes a stone skyrocket especially with VS clarity or higher. I like good clarity in a rb, but I agree with Gypsy that you need to be careful about clarity in old style cuts with larger facets. I have decided to send for an AVR when I come back from my vacation so I can decide if I want to work towards one for a right hand ring or even switch to an AVR e-ring and make my current stone into a 3 stone RHR. I need to sell one of my diamonds before I can buy another, but I need to settle once and for all whether I like AVR's better than a rb. Stay tuned early August!
