the average American e-ring costs between $2800 and $3600 (av. $3080.50) http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=284322

how much did the average pricescope e-ring cost? if you didn''t buy it / not bought it yet, feel free to guess!

keep in mind that Pscopers are not the ''average'' kind of bunch!!

this is just e-ring...not w-ring..correct?

the poll is just about the e-ring, yep

for mine, I want just a plain platinum band. I''d like for us to have the same, traditional, plain band just different sizes. but now that I am thinking of a pave e-ring, I will have to get a ring that matches

how much did you wedding band cost?

my w-ring was a drop in the bucket compared to the e-ring...to my then-fiance''s happiness. about $1600.

Are you asking about the ORIGINAL e-ring or the upgrade, if there is one?

I never thought about it to be honest, but I guess I meant the original

but please post your story

The average engagement ring value and the average engagement ring price are, of course, two different figures. I wouldn''t be surprised if lots of PSers have only spent the same amount as the average consumer. The PSer''s ring, of course, may be whiter, cleaner, bigger, and just better in general.

My engagement ring was bought about 12 years ago, we were both in college and bought it at a diamond remount show at the MALL.

It was less than $1000. But, hey, I''m getting an anniversary band... pictures to come next week!!!!!!

My eng. ring was also purchased while my husband and I were in college, so we purchased way over our initial budget of 1K and bought an ideal cut RB for $2700 (or 2800$$$ - some amount around this
9.gif
) The stone is beautiful but we paid exorbitant mall prices for a well cut stone.

My original e-ring and wedding band (they were purchased together, so I don''t know separate prices) were somewhere around $2500, many years ago

, purchased at the LA Jewelery Mart. It was a pretty ring with a 1.25ctw center stone and pear side stones. DH let me help pick it out, and the romance of the moment took over good sense. It wasn''t a strong setting, and I had to have it reset after a short time. We knew nothing about stones, so it is a k color of unknown cut. Now it''s a pendant, and I still love it.

that is a really good point, the savings are incredible!

this from the website of a local store -
plain, 18k gold, 1.27c G SI1 stone (doesn't list the cut) = $17,184 (exchange rate - $1.92:£1)

http://www.beaverbrooks.co.uk/index.cfm?Fuseaction=Products.ShowListProductDetails&OpenCatNo=9&ProductID=3183&UID=EB302845-C7BB-951E-14652FB41D1460C9

or this comparable stone from whiteflash -
18k gold tiffany style setting, 1.265 G SI1 "A Cut Above" = $8148 ($7998 for the stone, $150 for the setting)

http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Solitaire/18K-Gold-6-Prong-Tiffany-Style_771.htm

that is a saving of over $9000, over 50%, for an undoubtedly better cut!!!
thank heaven for pricescope!!!

I would be wary of going down to SI1, I am hoping to get my sweetheart a 1.2c, ACA, F or G, VS2 from WF and set it in a beautiful, platinum, pave setting. I may see is WF can help me to design the setting. could be around $12,000, maybe a bit more, doesn't matter, I just hope she loves it!

edited to add:
I like this one - 1.205c ACA G VS2 - 0.9 HCA - $9547 http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-901507.htm I hope there is something similar available next year!!! now I just have to find a wonderful setting

Good God that is a nice stone

I know! I really wish I could afford to get it now!!! I just hope they have something similar next year!

Mine was $3700 so I guess we fit right in with what the average American pays for a ring.
Interesting.

Mine fits in between the 8k and 10k. It was way off the mark of what I was looking at but when he started looking with me he led me towards those. I felt like a kid in a candy store...and a bit guilty. But obviously I didn''t turn it down

I''m not quite sure what my fiance paid for my ring - i only know what the insurance says, and usually that''s WAAAAY higher than what is paid, right? So I just ran a pricescope search on my stone, got the approx price and added the setting costs to figure it out.

My original engagement ring and wedding band together were under $500. My upgrade e-ring is in the $13,000 - $17,000 range... and it is QUITE the upgrade from 0.25ctw to 3ctw!

Well, I counted my e-ring as the rock and the temp setting. I have yet to figure out who will do the setting, and if there will be any sidestones, or pave, or the like. The simple eternity wedding ring I have already factored all that into our costs for the wedding. I can''t consider getting the ring set for another three years down the line until we are both out of school. My DF has already offered his sign on bonus after grad school for my permanent ring upgrades...

But I would say we have a pretty ring now, and if it ain''t broke don''t fix it... (but with my wear and tear, the time may soon arrive)

Not to hijack the thread, but Treysar, if your insurance value is way higher than he paid, you are overpaying for insurance. Depending on the type of policy you have, you should probably insure for what you paid + a little for buffer in order to replace it and not overpay in premiums. If your policy gives them the option to "replace or refund", they will pay less than you did for the same ring due to their buying power, so you will get the same ring if it is insured for approx what you paid as if it is insured for 2x what he paid. The key is to make sure your insurance has all the details of the stone and ring so that you will really get a similar ring. I have my sarin report, appraisal, H&A pics, etc on file with them.

Hubbie bought it for $5000 (his friend is a jeweller) but it -- 1.3, E, VVS1 -- is worth more than twice that.

VERY dumb question - is insurance the same thing as an appraisal?

VERY dumb question - is insurance the same thing as an appraisal?
It can be, but it doesn''t have to be. The real answer is that there can be different appraisal amounts, full retail to wholesale. I asked my appraiser to give me an appraisal for a realistic replacement value, not the full retail 2x amount. The appraisal on my earrings has several values listed, based on where they would be purchased. My insurance let me designate the insured amount, independant of the appraisal. They had to agree that it was realistic for the value of the ring, based on the appraisal and the purchase receipt. It is a replace or refund (at their choice) policy, and they have strong buying power, so they will most likely pay less to replace me ring than I would. Thus, I don''t want to pay premiums on a value that is 2x what I paid. If I pay premiums on a value just over what I paid or on the full retail value which is much higher, I would still get the same ring back if they were replacing it. Thus, I choose to pay on the smaller amount.

My ering was purchased over 6 years ago for about $3500. I was still in college and hubby was making $9-$10 as a paramedic. He financed the ring (I know, bad boy
38.gif
) but he really wanted to do it. My wedding band is a 1/2 ct diamond channel band for $500, and later I added a 1/2 ct diamond wrap for $800. I love my rings and they mean the world to me.

However, after we move in the spring, I''ll start the upgrade process...I''m starting from scratch because we don''t want to part with my original diamond. I figure that when it''s all said and done, my dream ring will cost about $15,000 or so. I refuse to put myself in debt over it...as much as I love diamonds.
30.gif
so it will take me a little while.

Okay, I have to admit it. My first engagement ring cost under $1000. It was a 1/4 carat round solitaire. We bought what we could afford since we were young and he had just joined the Marines and was heading off to boot camp. Two years later we upgraded to a weddng set that had a 1/3 carat marquise center with baguette sapphires and round diamonds on the sides. That one was $2800. For our 5-year anniversary we upgraded the center stone to a .52-carat marquise. I don''t remember the cost on that. I have no idea of the color or clarity on any of these diamonds. After 10 years we were divorced.

So on to the next try at marriage. This time my husband-to-be and I, well mostly I, created a custom-setting for my e-ring. We purchased a 1.02 carat radiant-cut H, SI1 diamond. It was mounted in a wide catherdral band with two .60 carat emerald-cut sapphires semi-bezel set on either side. Total cost when all was said and done, around $5000. Here is a picture:

Now it is 6 years later and we recently decided to upgrade my ring. I selected a 2.19-carat certified F, I1 marquise diamond. It is mounted in a band with 40 channel-set round diamonds, in 2 different sizes, that cover 3 sides and a basket-type mount under the prongs. I have tried several times to get a decent picture, with no luck. I just received the ring from the jeweler yesterday. I love it! It is so beautiful and sparkly. As soon as I get a decent picture I will post it.

I have some half-way decent pictures now. Here is my upgrade (described in the above post):

Mine was $475 in 1980 (.46 ct). It recently appraised in it's three stone setting for $1500 (other two stones total .3 ct-former earrings). My upgrade in 1993 (1.06ct) was $2500. Neither were fabulous stones, but I didn't care. They are both round brilliants. I just got an oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds for Christmas that cost more than my original e-ring. LOL

Good points

My original was an I SI1 1.54 ct RB. MY husband bought it for me in 2000 for $6800 including the plain platinum tiffany setting.
I really miss it as it was stolen a few months ago.

I think I am buying my second e-ring today, and it will be a H SI2 2.23 RB ideal cut for $14,500 including the setting.

Maybe in another few years I will get a 3rd e-ring...I would really like to "collect" them, as I have seen so many beautiful rings on PS, and find myself wanting one of each :) Then again, I get the feeling that many of the major contributors here are connesuiers (sp?) and collecters of e-rings!

NyssaLynne, that stone is lovely! An I1? Wow what a find!

I was one of the "less than $1000" responders, but we got married 10 years ago and didn''t have much to send. My whole w-set was less than $1000!!

Now my upgrade???? THAT''S a whole different story!!!
