First time diamond buyer, first time forum poster. I''m hoping to get some input on the following emerald cut diamond, including what you think a fair market price would be and whether I should be concerned that the depth and table percentages seem a little bit high based on the AGA chart. Also, how important are polish and symmetry on an emerald cut? I''ve read they matter more than on a brilliant diamond, but it''s been very difficult to find excellents in those categories; even VGs for both are relatively rare on sites such as Blue Nile. Is this diamond worth a premium for that reason? Many thanks.

Carat weight: 1.7

Color: D

Clarity: VVS1

Polish: Excellent

Symmetry: Very Good

Depth %: 65.6%

Table %: 68%

Crown %: 33%

Girdle: Thin

Culet: None

Fluorescence: None

Measurements: 8.47 x 5.78 x 3.79

Length/Width Ratio: 1.47

Ummm, I don''t think the crown height is really 33%, is it? Also, as long as Polish and Symmetry is VG, VG, it is sufficient. It is very difficult for non-experts to tell the difference between excellent and very good in both categories, even with a loupe. The depth isn''t all that bad at 65.5%. Yes, the table is a bit large but if you have a high crown height and it looks beautiful in person, I don''t see why not.

Is this diamond worth a premium for that reason?
IMO? No.

But again, I would not say VVS1 deserves a premium either... by simple rule of thumb: ''if it doesn''t show, it ain''t there'' (or something along those lines.

This rule, however, made me wonder if some visually indistinguishable grades (say, E-VS2) would allow a larger or in some way better stone for the money. And at least on Pricescope database, didn''t quite find much. It would barely be 2 cts and not necessarily larger - as this diamond of yours seems to have great spread (size for weight).

Meaning, next time I''ll say to myself ''VVS'' ain''t worth it, I''ll think twice

How much is the premium for the finish grades anyway?

Just wish the flawless material got a brilliant cut; can''t quite guess from the numbers listed, but at least everything sounds great (thinking of the AGA tables listed under Knowledge /Fancy Shapes on top of this page and a few personal guesstimates

in top of that).

I hope you like this one at first sight!

The 33 must be the crown angle, not the crown height. I don''t know the crown height.
