Hi All,

I''m new here and am awed but all of the information and knowledge on these boards. What a great resource.

I recently got engaged and am looking for an Asscher cut stone. F color and above, 1.6 - 2 carats, VVS2-VS2 (depending).

1) Is there no cut rating for Asschers? This seems to be the indication I get from reading online but I''m confused.

2) Many of the stones I see have a GIA certificate that call the stones square cut emeralds even if the sides are clipped (stop sign like shape). Is this correct?

3) Does it matter (or affect the value of the stone) if the GIA certificate is from 2005? I know GIA changed the certificate between 2005 and 2006. Do older certificates change anything? Is this a bad sign that the stone is still on the market (I imagine Asschers are not traded like rounds are, in terms of actual investment, etc.)?

Also, I''ve seen cut and polish and understand what they indicate but am unclear on what the minimum should be. Would very good be sufficient? Also, would I be able to tell the difference?

Any other information would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

No labs grade Asscher in cut. You will have to find a trusted vendor. GoodOldGold is a good source for asscher.

Yap, asscher is sort or a brand name IIRC.

Report date does not matter much for fancies I believe. GIA change the report in 2006 for Round brilliant to include cut grade.

Polish, Good and above, most lay person should not be able to tell the difference.

EDT:

If you want us to help you look at a stone, we will need images, real image, an ASET image and crown height of the stone. Strmrdr is the resident expert in Asscher.

This stone from GOG looks good, in your specs, not sure about what your budget is. But you can look at the images we will need from there.

Yes, here is some history.

strmrider has a huge interest and much knowledge of Asschers and is the best person to help you as he knows much about asschers and you can trust his experience and judgement, he has been doing this for years. He will need detailed images such as photos ( very clear and detailed to show the faceting and windmills) , ASET images and preferably a Sarin report in order to get detailed measurements and the crown height. If you can get that info that would be very helpful and I will make sure he sees this thread, he should be along later and can help you.

This page explains ASET

1: no there is not a formal cut rating for them that works.

2: gia sometimes names them without rhyme nor reason

3: no it does not matter

Polish and symmetry for online shopping it is best to stay vg/vg or above.
Good is not always an issue but it can be.

The key to shopping online for asschers is vendor selection and getting images and or videos.
The numbers don''t take you very far.
This often means having a vendor call in diamonds.

Stonecold that asscher you linked to if freaking me out.
I think I finally figured out what is different.

Look at the pic; the sides of the windmills are curved.
Hold a straight edge against the upper left side of the lower left windmill.

I have never seen this before.
How could the cutter even do this since cutting wheels are flat.
I also cannot imagine any photographic distortion that could do this.

????????

tilt and remember the windmills are not one facet but one per row.

That diamond is deep for the crown height and not very spready.
Not a dog but there are better ones out there.

Hi Again,

Thank you all for replying. I really appreciate it.

How will I be able to "find" you all again when I have pictures to post?

I contacted GOG to see what else they could track down and am working with a few others that have been recommended to me by friends.

Thanks again!

when you get some pictures start a new thread with asscher in the title and we will appear :}

OK. Thanks, Karl!

I don''t have a pic but what do you think of the following (I know they are only #''s but...)

"Square Emerald Cut" according to GIA...
6.68x 6.46 x 4.52
1.66 carat, VS2, F, Faint Fluorescence
Depth 70%
Table 58%
Girdle Thick
Finish & Symmetry - Very Good

Asking price is around 11k IIRC (reasonable?)

Is fluorescence troubling?

Also, I''m looking for a stone that is as close to 1.00 in proportion as possible on account of the setting I have in mind.

I also tend to prefer a slightly "thicker" windmill (does that make sense?) - does that have a name?

Thanks again.

sounds like a start, need pics and crown height.
depth is right on the border but if the crown is high enough it is fine.

fluorescence is not an issue.

Yes thicker windmills/larger corners makes sense.

Hi Again,

Thanks for your reply.

Will try to get pics... GIA report doesn''t list crown height? Is there another stat I can use to figure it out?

What are the guidelines for depth?

Ask the vendor to run a Sarin scan on the diamond as that will give the crown height, then strmy can help you further.

For depth I like to stay under 70% unless it has a really high crown.
That one is right at the border.
A sarin scan can be ran on the diamond to get crown height.
