Hi everyone,

Well, we just got back from meeting with the jeweler and seeing the wax. I saw the traps for the first time...I always pictured them to be step-cut but they are the brilliant kind. So many people have said that step cuts go best with step cuts and I am inclined to agree.

But I think this could be really cool. I just can''t picture it and haven''t found a picture similar.

Has anyone ever seen this? Would it be a mistake? (I think the other option would be to go for tapered baguettes). But I like the uniqueness.

I''d love to hear anyone''s opinion or see pictures if you are a better searcher than I am...which is highly likely.

Or even any photoshop experts willing to do a rush job?

I''d really appreciate any help, advice, suggestions, encouragement, funny jokes...you know

Cheers to all

Hi atlanta,

Lucky you getting an Asscher! There are both step and brilliant cut traps. I love the step cuts with them. A brilliant cut? Not so sure I personally would pick that. I too think steps should go with steps. But it''s all personal!

Did you put them next to the Asscher? And if so, what did you think?

How big are they compared to the asscher?
If they are small its not an issue but if they are large I would get the step cut ones.

I have an emerald cut diamond and have been thinking of how to reset it. I placed brilliant cut half moons next to it and it was a very strange [to me] look. I would expect that the brilliant traps would not look much better to me. If it were me, I would stick with the step cuts.

Hi Atlanta,

Asschers sure are gorgeous!

I think brilliant cut side stones with their small stardust like flashes would be an odd contrast with the bolder flashes from the asscher.

This ring has brilliant sidestones, to give you some idea of the effect.

Cheers,

Those two cuts have a very different type of sparkle. The sidestones could "out shine" the center stone. And the combination of different looks seems chaotic to me. Confused rather than elegant. Sometimes "different" is just that ... DIFFERENT. Not great! Not unique! But ... different. Because most folks wouldn''t like that combo.

If YOU liked it - cool. But if you''re just accepting it because its what the jeweler had & you don''t wanna make a fuss .... NOT OKAY. Man up! Stick to what you want in the face of challenges. This is a very important purchase and one that is going to get a LOT of careful scrutiny for years upon decades ... possibly centuries.

Hi everybody!
atalanta- we have built rings with step cut center and brilliant sides- I may have photos tomorrow.
But I am in the camp that prefers step cut traps beside an Asscher.
As Storm mentioned, if they are small, it might not be all that noticeable- however if they are the length of the side of the center ( a measurement I strive for) you lose the entire effect of "Super-Step Cut" where the sides kind of echo, and emphasize the "step-ness" of the center

This isn''t a perfect ring by any means but does show the step/step effect. I''m not sure how brilliant traps would look but my feeling is that they would clash and you''d lose the crisp clean lines of the asscher.

I think brilliant cut traps would look busy with a step cut center and would take away from the understated elegance of a step cut. I''m currently setting my square EC/asscher with trap sides (bullets too), and I chose step cut traps. IMO, brilliant cut traps would disrupt the flow of the setting.

On the one hand, there is contrast. On the other... it wouldn't be my preference. Ditto Deco. Don't be bullied or settle for less than just right. It's your engagement ring! Get what you want.

I agree that it depends on the proportions of the sidestones to center stone. If the radiant traps are smaller, it might work, but overall I think steps with steps is best. How did you think it looked with the asscher?

If you have hesitations, I would tell your jeweler now before he sets it. This is your engagement ring, and most people don''t wind up upgrading. It has a lot of sentimental value and you''ll be looking at it every day for years. Make sure it''s what you want, and congratulations on the engagement!

How exciting to get an asscher. I don''t know if I''d like them together but I''d have to see them.

To me step cut traps compliment and asscher very well. The brilliant cut traps could be too busy for the center stone, thus taking away from it.. It''s all what you like and what you want. There are no rules... I can''t wait to see your ring and to see what you decide. Good luck.

Thanks so much. I would love to see pictures. I think that would really help.

Thank you to everyone. Strm, Gypsy, Blu, Kalegh, HopeDreams, Deco, Erica (sorry if I forgot anyone...I can''t seem to figure out how to go back and forth without losing my message!).

I really appreciate you all weighing in and the advice and suggestions. I''m doing a novel thing (for me) and leaving it in the hands of my wonderful (and highly capable even if I totally suck at delegating or not doing everything myself) fiance. Between him (the true love of my life) and the jeweler (who was super nice and assured us that we can keep tweaking until everything is perfect), I have to trust that everything will be good.

Everyone''s support really helps. I promise to stay on here and definitely post pictures (of my perfect ring...whatever that ends up being!) when I have them.

Thanks again.

Nicole
