We have been looking for a Asscher since December now, and right now narrowed it down to these two. Our time for this e-ring is getting close...but if you guys think this is a no-go I will search some more. These are from Jamesallen.com, because I really would like to set it on the DanHov ME15 ring. I would love to get your honest opinions. Thanks in advance

first ones not an asscher its a squarish emerald.
Rather poorly cut one at that,,,,,
 
I only see specs and a picture for one diamond--I thought you were comparing two.

I think most people here will tell you that D VVS1 is overkill when your stone is 1 carat--you could do an F VS1 and get a much larger stone. Asschers face up particularly small, so you may want to go for size here.
 
2nd one is worth getting more pictures of.
 
I really don't know much about what makes a nice asscher cut stone...but the first stone is a little too much rectangular and D VVS is a little overkill. The second stone looks nice, but I'm not an expert at this stuff. Hopefully storm will chime in.

ETA: I love the setting you picked out! It's going to be a gorgeous project, I hope you post pictures of the finished product.
 
I like the 2nd one better too ... my own asscher isn''t perfectly square -- but it doesn''t have a LINE in the middle (instead of a squarish dot) as the one in the first picture shows. I think that''s what''s throwing people "off" about that stone.

From the one photo I see of the 2nd, and the stats -- it seems very nice. It''s very tricky to pick them out by photos alone though. Perhaps you could get the stone sent to you or an appraiser for inspection before having it set? So you can see it with your own eyes ...



Note to Fanboy: It''s kinda ironic to hear you advocating the advantages of "F" color and lower clarity grades considering the stone you thought worthy of your bride-to-be/and suitably representitive of your love was a "D" color, VVS Royal Asscher ... accept no substitutes!

Note, I qualified my comment by pointing out that D VVS1 might be overkill at one carat, for an Asscher.
 
Thank you for your replies, I thought the first one did not look like a asscher to me.
I would love to get more pictures of #2 (did you guys see the pic on the website?) but they do not offer idealoscopes for asschers at Jamesallen. Also everytime I requested pictures, they only send one.

That picture is taken in NY once you settle down on one maybe 2 they can bring them in for more pictures and a look see.
If it was me id have that done on the 2 I linked.
 
I do like the second one you reccomended, but what do you think about the table and depth of that one>?
 
Fanboy, VVS1 is overkill in any asscher of any size IMO.

I like storms pics a lot. The second one originally posted as promise too. The first one is icky.

Really? with the table at 62% and depth at 61.5%?

yes really.....
sarin scan gives the angles of the facets and so forth, the crown height being the important number that is missing.
If its over 10% and the rest of the pictures look good id buy it myself if I was in the market at this time.

A sarin scan gives measurements of the stone and records depth, table, crown height, etc. and you have to ask the vendor to provide one for you. You want a crown height that is large enough to give enough fire.
 
Ahhh... I understand now. I just called JamesAllen.com for both those diamond''s sarin report. Office is closed now but I hopefully will get them by tomorrow. I also put them on hold. The 2nd diamond I mentioned and the 2nd diamond that Storm linked.

Gosh I love this site!!! With out you guys I would probably of bought a DUD. Thanks. I will update tomorrow.
 
Hi Jessme7, Have you checked out Good Old Gold''s website too? My recent Asscher upgrade just came from there and I love it and I love GOG''s lifetime upgrade policy. James Allen''s is only 5 yrs.

Assher girl: Thanks for the suggestion, I love what GOG has for pictures. The main reason why I am going with JA is because I like the DanHov ME 15 or ME33 setting (indecisive). Where did you get your setting (the one on your aviator)? I love it.
 
Hi Jessme, my setting is by Gabriel NY. GOG carries this line although it is not on their site. The e-ring was orginally a band that I had the jeweler remove 2 small melee and place the head there for the asscher center stone. I wanted a flush fit so now I basically have a wedding ring on each side of my e-ring and it is totally flush.

I''m sure that if you found "the" diamond at GOG, JA would ship the setting there, or vice versa. I don''t mean to be talking you out of purchasing from JA, I just know that for me it was the right choice, and a huge part of that was their upgrade policy.

The ME15 is awesome though. Good luck!

I don''t really like either of the two you posted - the first is an enerald cut, and the second, though it has nice patterns, seems to have a very dark drop center.

I like both that stgrm recommended - you will get great spread with the second one - you are lucky to find a shallower asscher that still looks great - I have a deeper one, and even though it''s big, I always wish it weren''t so deep so I would get better spread.

I would go with the second one that strm recommended if you can get more pics.
 
Hi Assher Girl, I was bored at work last night and looled up your previous post when you first got your upgrade back...loved all the pictures. It is a awsome stone you got there, and I really like how thin your ring is. It does make the diamond look a whole lot bigger. Thats the reason for my intrest in your setting because I am only getting a little over 1ct. GOG did not have any E or F colors in 1ct asschers though. But I will keep browsing their site while I wait for more stuff on the diamond that Storm suggested from JA.

I am leaning towards the ME 15, because I like how the diamond sits a little lower. I work in health care field and I really want to wear the ring while I work and dont want it to keep on getting cought on stuff.

Hi Vespergirl, thank you for your comment and opinion. It really helps. Thats what I initially thought about the dark steps in the center on that 2nd stone also. I just did not know how much you could see it non-magnified.

Can someone explain why the 61.5 depth and 62 table is still considered awsome? I always thought: 66-69 depth, and 57-61 table.

I worked all night and just going to bed now for a few hours but I will keep my eye out for new emails or calls about the assher, just because I am gonna have a hard time sleeping with it on my mind anyway. Thanks everyone

62 table is fine, 50s to low 60s is the sweet spot.
I have designed kicken asschers down to 50% depth but there isn't rough suitable to cut them available.
A lot of shallow asschers are not well cut and have weight retaining tricks applied to them that ruins performance.
When a well cut shallower asscher comes around they are worth jumping at for the extra spread.
They are rare because they can cut the rough into heavier stones of other shapes and sell them for more, or apply tricks to save weight to them.

edit too add: because of all the bad cut shallow asschers out here a lot of the time if no picture is available they arent worth bothering to have called in(chances are its a dog) but when you have a picture that says its worth a closer look that changes.

Ok I could not wait. I just called JA to get the diamond in their office to have more pictures taken. Hope to get it today or tomorrow.
