Hmmm...really hard to give advice here because we can't get in your head! Is your main problem that you've found "The One" too soon, and need to shop some more before you feel good? If so, then go ahead and shop some more. Just as there aren't many 4 caraters around, neither are there many 4 carat shoppers around.

so you might not loose out on this one if you wait a bit.

I'd hate to see you pass this up only because of the girdle thickness. Didn't Storm say almost all are thicker? (Mine is thin/verythick, whatever that means).

The reality is that ANY asscher you get, regardless of the numbers, will look smaller than your friends' RBs of similar weight/value. If this is an issue, then you need to look at other cuts...

Always looking for vicarious thrills, I say: Go for it!!!! lol

You''ve hit the nail on the head! YES! I know it looks smaller, but does rival a nice 3ct Round (plus I have size 3 fingers so it willl look pretty huge!). I guess it''s just the $$$ freaking me out. Something I''ve always wanted, and now that it''s in reach, or the thrill of the hunt is over, is a bit of a let down...can''t really explain why...

SIZE THREE FINGER???!!!

LOL, you NEED to have a thick girdle!!

Well, lwd, you''ve definitely done it to me: Now I''m DYING for you to get this baby....it will look incredible on your teensy hands, and then we can all get busy helping you mount it!! LOL

Seriously....maybe storm will answer this...but I thought that extra depth in asschers make for more sparkly stones. Mine sparkles like crazy, and its depth is 71%!

(get it get it get it get it get it get it get it)

Small sidetrack coming up:

Widget,
Isn''t it awesome that the carat weight of her asscher is larger than her finger size? This is what most women aspire for. Imagine someone with a size 6 wearing a 6 carat stone.

Back to your regular programming:

LWD,
I too think you wanted to really get into the hunt and enjoy the search. However, well cut large stones in step cuts aren''t as common as rounds. I''d say you are fortunate to find one so quickly. Imagine that you''d been searching for a year with not much success. My guess is that if you saw this asscher after a year of unfruitful seach, you''ll be jumping all over it.

Well, that''s just my guess.

modeling this stone with a med girdle is a wasted exercise because the odds of finding one are slim.
A kicken asscher in hand is worth more than 10000 asschers on a list and there are not 10000 4ct asschers out there.
Id be shocked if there was more than 3 kicken 4ct asschers on the market right now and you have 1/3 of them in hand.

Depth: high crowns give them fire, girdle has little effect other than durability and spread which is a trade off at times. Pavilion depth can be in a wide range and still be kicken if it matches the crown and is symmetrical and well cut.

The bottom line in my opinion is that you can spend 6 months searching for the other 2 kicken 4ct asschers out there and they might not be as good as the one you have and while your doing that the prices are going up.

HI Widget, I'm not Storm, obviously. But I thought it was depth that gave it the miles deep look and crown height that gave it sparkle? Maybe he'll pop over and clarify. I love your asscher too, BTW... but you already knew that from all the ogling at GTGs.

Mine is about 65 point SOMETHING depth and 15.6 crown. My GIA cert says thick girdle. My sarin said med to thick (go figure).

ETA: Ahh... posted at same time as storm apparently. Thanks for the clarification Storm.

I''m with widget on this one--I love this stone and the girdle is not an issue at all. I must have looked at 10 asschers and none of them had a thin or medium girdle (one did have medium to thick). It must just be the cut, but a proportionately higher number of asschers have thick girdles compared to RBs. Mine has a slightly thick to thick girdle. Just do a search for stones online and you''ll see that 90% of asschers have some type of thick girdle. And trust me, on a 4 carat stone the extra spread you''d get would only be in your head--you probably wouldn''t be able to thick a medium girdle from a thick girdle if they were side by side.

Obviously if you''re going to regret it immediately after buying it then you should wait until you find something that feels like "it" to you. But if this stone doesn''t do it for you, you might be waiting a long time :)

shallow asschers can be kicken there are a few samples that poped up recently but finding them...
in 4ct? ... buy a lottery ticket the odds are much much much higher.
I would have to be cut from the cap of about a 20++ ct rough.

That''s right. Kaleigh''s is on the shallow side but very lovely with a great step/ miles deep look.

Thanks Gypsy, Chrono, Storm, NewEnglandLady and Widget... I really needed the extra "push"...the vendor told me it''s one of the most beautful asschers they have seen -- and told me they see a ton of stones. The 5 steps really give it that "10 mile deep" look... and your stamp of approval helps me make my decision...

Your expert advice is much appreciated -- can''t wait to have you guys help with the mounting (but think it will be just a knife-edge four prong, maybe claw tiffany setting)... DH is going to wire the funds today... I''m so nervous, yet excited... very emotional...

Thanks again -- will post pics :)

How thrilling!!!!!!!!!! I''m so excited for you!!

Can''t wait to see one zillion pictures!

LWD, I can''t imagine how excited you must be, please rest assured that you got an amazing stone. It''s going to be absolutely stunning, especially on your dainty fingers!! Please keep us updated on this--as you know, we love pictures!

I can''t even imagine what I''d do if DH bought me a beautiful, 5-step, 4 carat asscher. I don''t know if I''d cry (with excitement) or faint. Probably both.

I, too, am very excited. With such a large stone, my taste runs that simpler is better to highlight its beauty. Nothing fussy, busy or ornate, yet deserves to be set in a well made setting. Might I suggest a Mark Morell setting?
